River Birch Cottage

Our place is located right where Billups Creek meets the Chesapeake Bay! Spend your weekend kayaking, boating, fishing, or just soaking up the sun and taking in the view. This unique waterfront spot is the perfect place to relax and unwind, enjoying the birds and the beautiful starry night sky, unobstructed by city lights. The cottage is on our private 2.5 acres and you are welcome to use our pier to hang out, crab, fish, or launch your kayak or small craft. If you have a larger boat, you can put it in nearby and dock it at our pier for quick access. This is a great cycling area so feel free to bring your bikes and explore. We're only a couple miles to public beach access at Haven Beach on the Chesapeake Bay. We really enjoy our quick access (2 miles) to the great little town of Mathews, with it's historic court square and a multitude of restaurants, consignment shops, grocery stores, banking, etc. If you don't feel like cooking, check out the White Dog Bistro for fine dining and cocktails, Southwinds Cafe for a great pizza in a tavern atmosphere w/occasional live music, a Mexican Restaurant, Richardson's Cafe, and this is just naming a few! We have an upper and lower decks for your lounging and cooking, an outdoor shower, easy water access and a great yard area for horseshoes, badminton, or just kicking back. There's a sandy bottom for swimming, and we always have baited crab pots and we're happy to share! We also raise our own oysters that we also love to share, and in the fall and winter we love our oyster roasts! We are usually on premises and are happy to answer any questions and steer you in a direction toward what you're looking for. We're ready to help you any way we can and really want you to enjoy your stay in this beautiful part of Virginia! We've spent the last year fixing this up to our own picky standards for what we'd like in a waterfront rental. Mathews was voted one of the top Coolest Small Towns in America by Frommers Travel. People are friendly and Mathews County is almost entirely surrounded by water with not one stop light in the whole county! It's almost hard to believe it's only 1.5 hrs. from Richmond, 3 hrs. from DC, and 1 hr. from Williamsburg. Get some fresh veggies, local goods and a feel for this quaint town every Sat. morning from April to Nov. at the Farmers Market in the court square. This is a rural area, so you'll need your car for transportation, although there is a taxi service. It's a good idea to bring your water shoes, and don't forget suntan lotion, fishing poles and water toys if you're so inclined! You can get a fishing license close by in town if needed.
