Ground floor with living room, kitchen, laundry room, bedroom and large walk-in closet, bathroom. Incredible views to the east, west and south with galleries on all three sides. Two loft bedrooms These are the spaces available. First there is a large bedroom with a bathroom next to it. It has a walk in-closet which is practically another bedroom. Three windows in the actual bedroom provide views to the East, the south and the west. The south window is large and opens onto an outdoor gallery with an amazing mountain view . A door, also on the south, opens onto that gallery and to the east there is a large, passive solar drying space for hanging laundry. This bedroom is private and is lockable. It has a queen size bed. There is room for an extra single bed and a desk and chair should such items be required. There is also an antique, spooled toddler crib available. There is a loft which overlooks the kitchen/laundry area. There are two semi open sleeping rooms which are not completely private and do not lock. One area has a double bed and a small closet and the other has two single beds. The downstairs of the house is where we sleep. Upstairs is a communal space except for the above mentioned bedrooms. The workings of the house such as the electrical panels, solar panel inverters, water pumps, laundry area and kitchen are in this space. There is a wood stove in the sitting area and a TV that can be used to cast movies from a computer or smart phone. There is a washing machine available and a propane dryer for laundry, however the host will operate this equipment for you. The kitchen is an open plan complete with double sinks, a cocktail sink and a propane stove. The refrigerator is large and has a freezer compartment within. The laundry and kitchen are shared spaces with the hosts, as are the living, dining and the large portion of the outdoor gallery. Climate is interesting and it dictates how our inside space is organized. We keep things sparse for easy cleaning. There is a wet season with lots of rain and storms and occasionally hurricanes. Winds can be fierce and humidity high. Closed spaces attract mildew. Indoors is usually cold or cool and outdoors hot when the sun shines and cold when it is cloudy. Warm clothes for layering are a must. Rubber shoes are good if hiking in the area is part of the plan. The mud is sticky and heavy on the roads and fields. Our land is almost mud free except in the vegetable gardens and newly planted areas. Then there is a dry season. We get no precipitation from Dec. untill April. Occasionally there will be a freak storm but that is rare. The days are sometimes crystal clear and the ground is crunchy underfoot. There are still cloudy days and humidity can still be annoying but the beauty of both seasons eclipses the inconvenience. Still within our perimeter walls, allow me to describe the outdoor space. We have 22 pets at the moment so there are paddocks for 2 sheep, little buildings for those sheep plus 9 hens, 1 guinea hen and 4 Muscovy drakes. We have 4 dogs and possibly a 5th coming soon plus 2 old cats. Because we are trying to create an organic environment for the protection of local wildlife and birds we are planting as many trees as possible and keeping areas of wild grasses and shrubs. We have 5 very small ponds with fish or frogs or both. There are paths to explore and places to just sit and meditate. There are things to do here if you are tired of hiking or meditating. There is a woodworking shop, vegetable gardens, flower gardens, animal companions and photo opportunities. There is a small classroom where local school children come to learn about computers. Outside our gates and 300 feet down the road is a village school where one might find an opportunity to give a presentation on an approved subject or to perhaps participate in a class lesson. There is a soccer field that is almost flat and where one will always find someone willing to play a bit. The nearest town is 20 minutes away by foot. It is friendly and active. 30 minutes away by car there is a town with a good restaurant which has a Sunday brunch worth going to. We have a 19 year old car that is only good for local use. We call her Betty and we allow Betty with her driver to make short skirmishes in the immediate area. Betty should only go a distance determined by how far the occupants are willing to walk back should Betty poop out for any reason. Because we are in a remote location and a rural setting, visitors need to consider the inconvenience to themselves should they need emergency medical attention. Also children should be closely supervised by their parents and be made aware that not all animals want hugs. We will provide simple vegetarian meals for guests who request them. There are no grocery stores in our area. We try to work with what nature provides and in the process are learning how to simplify our needs without becoming ascetics. We are enjoying ourselves and invite you to join us here if you think it would suit you. Deb and John Currelly As of January 18, 2020 Amazing forest with trails to ridge over-looking the city of Port-au-Prince and other walking trails to little villages and scenic views Pickups can be arranged for those without vehicles or vehicles unable to traverse the difficult terrain.
