The Pu'uhonua House is a classic 2 story, 5 bedroom plantation house that once housed a family of 9. The house is surrounded by a breadfruit, mango and coconut trees, bamboo and "olena"--Hawaiin tumeric. Guests & residents share the bathrooms, and the full kitchen. There is a comfortable living room with a diverse library and an old Japanese family "butsudan" (ancestral altar.) Pu'uhonua means "sanctuary," and this warm, grandma's-style-older home is a "sanctuary," a reminder of the spirit and architecture of "Old Hawaii,"when sugar was king, communities lived closer together and everyone shared what they had. Guests have access to high speed internet : 44 MBPS. We live in a "retreat zone" so guests wander down a quaint country road to Hakalau Veterans Park for cell phone reception or phone access via wifi. Zazen, sitting meditation is practiced 5 times a week and guests are invited to join. Yoga is Mon. & Thurs. evenings. Our "Temple of Gratitude" is open for guests to sit quietly in silence, contemplation and prayer. Akiko lives on the grounds. She was born and raised in Hawaii in the 40's and shares many stories of special places and events with guests. However during this time of Covid-consciousness, more guests are booking for a month, with 2 weeks initially for self quarantine. Akiko is always available to assist guests and residents. 55% discount daily rate for month long stays. Wailea is a quaint old plantation village of about 12 households. It is a very friendly and warm community where we know each other. Our families know each other. Every Tuesday, we have our community market, Hakalau Market FoodSHARE 3-5 pm. The community gathers to share, sell, and trade food; GREAT food for our bodies, souls, and our precious community. We are located 15 miles from Hilo. A car is a convenience. There is our Hele On Bus service. Our facilities offer the best of "old Hawaii," - the natural simplicity and quiet charm. We are steeped in all that is natural - the wind chimes sing, the winds blow through the multitude of trees and plants and shrubs, the light changes - a little rain, a little wind, sometimes a lot, and we live in deep peace and gratitude.
