1811 Historic Stone Hill Home: Private & Clean
Welcome to our 200 year old home that we've nicknamed "the Little House" located in the Mill village of Stone Hill within the eclectic neighborhood of Hampden. We are your neighbors, in the "Big House". It was built by Elisha Tyson as the servant quarters of his summer home. Tyson was an Quaker, businessman, inventor and perhaps most importantly, an ardent abolitionist. He actively participated in the underground railroad, using his homes along the Jones Falls as stops along the route. The house, itself, is 3 stories and is cozy, quiet and has beautiful light. It is full of history. Tyson built the home in 1811 and then sold the property to the Mount Vernon Mill Company in 1840. At this point, the Mill Company built the rest of the stone houses you will see. This "mill village" housed many of the mill workers and our house was then used as the "Manager's" house for many years. In 1925, the house was split up into two homes. We have recently take the 1st step toward re-connecting the house by opening up one original passageway. Bedrooms: On the second floor, is the main bedroom with a queen bed. On the 3rd floor is the second bedroom with two twin beds. There is a full-size futon couch in the living area as well. Bathroom: Our bathroom in on the 2nd floor and does have a tub. Kitchenette: Our small kitchenette includes a microwave, refrigerator, toaster, coffee maker, sink & counter, tea kettle, french press as well as utensils, mugs, plates and wine glasses. We do provide ground coffee and tea. If you wish to pick up your own coffee, there are 3 wonderful spot to get great coffee grounds: The Wine Source, Spro, and Common Ground. All are on the Avenue and a short walk away. Additionally, there is living room space, high speed internet, Roku/TV, picnic area in the backyard garden, and your own parking space. Parking: we have parking pad for one car. If you have additional vehicles, you will need to let us know. We can make room on our pad for an extra fee of $15. Or you are free to park additional vehicles on Chestnut St. Side note: As our house is small, we limit it to 4 guests though we can accept a 5th guest. Please contact us directly to set this up. You are welcome to use the charcoal grill on the back patio. While COVID is still around, we are not allowing use of our laundry facilities. There is a decent laundromat nearby on Cold Spring Lane (Brighwash). If you need anything, just let us know. We will be available either in person or by phone through out your stay. You can have the house to yourself as you wish. There is door that connects the our house with yours. Just knock on the door or stop in if it's open. We love our neighborhood and can offer you many choices for eating and playing. We will also have a collection of recommendations in the living room area for you to peruse. We will be happy to assist you with your luggage up stairs to either bedroom. Hampden is an eclectic neighborhood in the central part of the city near the Johns Hopkins University campus. It is marvelously walkable, safe, and features a superb main street (36th St.) offering many restaurant, clothing, and sundry shopping opportunities. We are frequently referred to in national travel guides as one of the nation's most desirable urban neighborhoods. While public transportation is lackluster in Baltimore, there are great bike paths and parking is pretty easy in most locations. Let us know if you have any questions or need directions. For families or older folks, please be aware this since this house was built 200 years ago, the stair have a slight spiral in them and are narrow and may require extra vigilance with toddlers. If you have issues with stairs, this is not the house for you. The house is not child proofed. We are more than happy to assist you with your luggage from your car and/or up the stairs. Just let us know.
