Private Island Retreat In State Forest
How many people can say they rented an entire island for their vacation? This little slice of paradise is completely private, comes with complimentary kayaks and a row boat, and is jam packed with things to do!! Whitins Reservoir has some of the best fishing in Massachusetts and boarders the Douglas State Forest which has miles and miles of hiking, biking, and horseback riding trails! And of course, take full advantage of barbecues and campfires on your own private private island. Thank you for your interest in renting our island paradise, we hope you enjoy our island as much as we do. Summers in New England are painfully short and for most, vacation time is substantially shorter. Dodd Island’s beauty and solitude provides a magnificent backdrop to the perfect island vacation. The island is approximately 7 acres with foot paths throughout. The water here is always calm which makes it a great place to bring your boat or rent one from us. The water is beautifully warm and clear for snorkeling and swimming. You can see turtles and huge large mouth bass as well as sunfish, pickerel and perch. Whitins Reservoir is a warm shallow lake with water depths around the island at about 20feet maximum. The reservoir is about 210 acres in area and is one of the clearest, cleanest lakes in all of Massachusetts. The water is so clear that you can see the bottom as well as fish almost anywhere you look. The under water visibility is 20 to 40 feet which is unheard of in all but a few lakes which makes it great for snorkeling and diving. The land across from the island is part of the state forest system and it is made up of thousands of acres, all of which have hiking trails, brooks, ponds, meadows, etc. In fact, there are very few houses on the lake at all, due to most of the shoreline (3/4) is state forest. Summer time water temperatures are in the mid 80's. Jet skis and power boats are permitted but you must use common sense and obey boating laws. The beauty of this lake is that there is NO PUBLIC ACCESS because the lake is privately owned by all the people who live on the lake and because there are so few homes on the lake, the boat traffic is minimal. In essence, most of the time you pretty much have the lake to yourself. Try and find that anywhere else! You rent the entire 7 acre island with two cottages on it. The main cottage has a glassed in porch with a queen futon, a central sitting dining, kitchen area with another futon. There is a low loft area above for kids. The bathroom is small with a shower and sink only, there is no flush toilet. We did not want to pollute the lake by putting in a septic system so we resurrected the old double seater outhouse. And its for this reason we must limit the number of guests to a maximum of 8 persons. The second cottage is a sleeping cabin with a large front deck right at the waters edge. It has a queen bed. Towels and linens are not provided. The kitchen is complete with stove, microwave, fridge, blender, toaster, dishes, utensils, pots and pans and grill. There is full electricity and hot and cold running water. There is an indoor shower and an outdoor shower. However all the water is pumped in from the lake and is NOT meant for drinking. So don't forget to bring along your drinking water. The island rental comes with a 12 foot aluminum rowboat to get you over to the island which is about 400 feet from the mainland. Additionally with your rental is 1 canoe and 2 kayaks. PLEASE NOTE: WE HAVE A 2 DOG LIMIT WITH THIS PROPERTY When you rent the island.. it's your very own private island for the duration of your stay. A couple important things to know before you rent. Check In: 4PM Check Out: 10:00 PM (we thank you in advance for respecting the check in/check out times so that our cleaning crew can do their job properly) Parking: There is a private designated lot at the top of the driveway for island renters. Getting to the Dock: Our access to the island runs through one of our other rental properties, The Lake House. We ask that you please be respectful of the renters in the Lake House when you are unloading and making your way to the island. Keep all pets on leash and curious kiddos with you at all times. This access has been working well so far and we hope to continue to be able to offer this cool island for rent separate from the Lake House with your help. From the parking lot just follow the driveway that runs along the side of the house which leads to the dock. To minimize the traffic down the driveway, we ask that you load all your gear into one vehicle to unload at the dock. Dock: There is a 12 foot aluminum rowboat and a canoe for your use to get to/from island. There are also 2 kayaks on the island to use during your stay. Lifejackets are in the brown storage box on the dock. Our property manager is always one call away for any questions you may have. The neighborhoods great! Mostly quite, a handful of squirrels and a couple chip monks next door but most of your neighbors or resting, "on the bottom"? (insert fish emojis here) **Please note Bathroom Facilities - 1 Outhouse, 1 shower in the main cabin, 1 outdoor shower both with hot and cold running water. BEFORE YOU BOOK: We limit the number of guests 6 persons 8 maximum with pre-approval. Pets: Limit of 2 dogs during your stay and that means guests too. No smoking inside the cabins.
