Welcome to Pelican’s Perch. This oceanfront two-bedroom condo in the friendly city of Bahia de Caraquez is really all you need for the perfect get-away. Comfortable, well equipped, spectacular views, the sounds of waves crashing on the shoreline, beautiful sunsets, warm temperatures made perfect with the sea breeze makes Pelican’s Perch a place you’ll never want to leave. John and Ruth have owned Pelican’s Perch since 2011. Having an oceanfront condo in the great little city of Bahia de Caraquez in Ecuador is quite an adventure for this couple from Canada. We just recently completed a major renovation of the condo including a completely new floor-plan designed by our friend Steve. His design skills transformed the condo to take full advantage of the spectacular views through every window and gives the feeling of a modern, spacious, open concept that we’re sure you’ll love. Virtually all of the furniture is new and we’re proud to say that we used local wood-workers (maestros) to build all of it. All the wicker furniture, cushions, tables and beds were made by local Ecuadoreans who take great pride in their work. We hope you enjoy it. Our Property Manager, Carlos Aguirre is a great guy and extremely helpful. He is fluently bilingual in Spanish and English. Carlos will be the gentleman that will welcome you to the condo and provide you with keys and go over things to make sure your stay is comfortable right from the start. If your stay is a long one and you wish to have the suite cleaned, Carlos can arrange to have Patricia or Luci come by and do a very thorough clean for 3 – 4 hours for $15. The people of Bahia de Caraquez are friendly and welcoming. Just say “Hola” and you’re sure to get a nice smile in return. The city is located on a peninsula with the Chone River on one side and the Pacific Ocean on the other. Just 26 kilometers from the actual equator means the climate stays pretty much perfect all year round. Warmer temperatures from December through to May and then a constant comfortable season the rest of the months. A great thing about Bahia being on a peninsula is it makes everything in easy walking distance. Take the more scenic stroll around the city using the Malecon or take a short-cut right across and get to know this great little town. The amazing market is just a five minute walk and there you’ll find a huge selection of fresh vegetables and fruit as well as the days catch of fish. Not to mention, cheeses, fresh ground peanut butter and everything in between! On the outskirts of town, there is a new mall that includes a large grocery store, food-court, other miscellaneous stores and a cinema! Miles and miles of beaches! With sand that gets hard packed at low tide which makes it easy for a relaxing walk or an energetic run. Rarely crowded, the beach in front of Pelican’s Perch is practically perfect. And then there’s the ocean! The Humbolt current which hits most of the Ecuador coast is nice and warm. Absolutely amazing temperature for a good swim or just a fun splash around! And of course, there’s always the pool and terrific deck to sit and enjoy some sun and the ocean view or a have a visit with friends or new acquaintances. Further away: Just up the coast a short 20 minute drive is the surf town of Canoa. Known for its spectacular beaches and great surfing, it is well worth the drive. Lots of great bars with good food too! Isla Corozon in the bay has a boardwalk which leads right over the mangroves where you can view many bird species. About a 45 minute drive south you can find the town of Crucita which features one of the best places for paragliding. $35 will get you the thrill of a lifetime with a true expert. Don’t forget Montecristi. 1.5 hours drive to this great little town famous for the “Panama Hat” amazing wicker furniture plus a fantastic golf course! Walking in Bahia is the preferred method of getting around in this little coastal town. The market, grocery store and many restaurants are all close by. And the beach is right across the street! For longer routes to the mall or bus station, yellow cabs are abundant and very inexpensive. Or hire an eco-friendly tri-cycle for shorter distances. Don't hesitate to call Carlos if you need help arranging transportation to the airport in Manta or other site-seeing destinations. He knows the area well and is always happy to help.
