Costa Rica is a place for exploration, and while there are many extraordinary place to explore in the country, there is only one place like Heredia. This beautiful Costa Rican province is just a few kilometers north of the capital San José, and it is widely known for being richly green, for its stunning, towering mountains, and for its many rivers. This stunning area in Costa Rica is great for tourists, and it is easy to walk to most of the main attractions, like the central park in downtown. If you choose to walk during your time in Heredia, you’ll be able to get an authentic and unique take on the area, and you’ll have plenty of time to explore and take in the sights. Walking means you’ll be on your own time, and that you can change your mind and your itinerary as much as you want. The city is easy to navigate since the main shops, restaurants, and cafes are conveniently located close together. You should wear comfortable shoes though, since the area does have some hills that you’ll have to walk. Just count it as some extra exercise! Heredia is a great place to stay because it offers an alternative to the busy life of San Jose, and while there you can visit National University. Destinations There are some destinations in Heredia that will require you to get transportation other than your feet, including the national parks, colonial towns, and port towns. Braulio Carrillo National Park is easy to access from Heredia, as well as the colonial town of Barva. The town is a nice place to stop on your way to or from the park. Puerto Viejo de Sarapiquiis a port town that is great to visit if you are seeking an outdoor or water adventure. Heredia is the capital city of the Costa Rica province of the same name, and features year-round warm temperatures. Though sometimes cloudy, this province is a dream-come-true for those that love outdoor adventures, even with the wet season bringing rain during May - November. Tranquil with just enough excitement, Heredia is perfect for weary travelers that need relaxation, and for seekers of big and small adventures with plenty of activities from hiking to white water rafting. Visitors can spend a quiet day horseback riding, or a fast-paced day packed with mountain tour bikes. No matter what brings a traveler to Costa Rica, the perfect activity can be found in Heredia. Eco Tours For the nature lover looking for a truly tropical experience, a Heredia eco tour delivers a big punch. From volcanoes to national parks to amazing waterfalls that let their visitors get a taste of sustainable tourism in full swing, Heredia offers an exciting, central location for you to set up camp for a few days. Make sure you visit the beautiful La Paz Waterfall in Vara Blanca. Rafting Tours The water is warm, come on in! For a white water rafting tour that keeps you moving, come to Heredia when the river will be moving the fastest – between the months of July and December – and visit the largest county in the area, Puerto Viejo de Sarapiquí. The Sarapiquí River reaches peaks of class III and IV rapids, and offers some amazing opportunities for nature-watching and spotting some beautiful wildlife. Canopy Tours A canopy tour, also known as zip lining, is a great way to get a sky-high view of your beautiful surroundings. While in Heredia, you’ll have the opportunity to take an hour and a half (roundtrip) tour at the Rainforest Aerial Tram. The Rainforest Aerial Tram is adjacent to the Braulio Carrillo Nacional Park , and true to its name, this location will give you spectacular views of the forest and its plant and animal life. Heredia is also home to the Residencias del Golf Hotel, a great place to stop before you head to downtown San Jose. Relaxing In a place like Costa Rica, just being outdoors at all can be more than enough for any traveler. While the province of Heredia has so much to offer, sometimes you just want to kick back and relax.. in some of the most beautiful surroundings in the world of course! The resorts here offer amazing views, like the one you can see of the Braulio Carrillo National Park if you stay at Cibeles Resort Hotel Cabinas & Spa. If you have a deeper budget for your rejuvenation activities, you can find upscale spas in Cariari, conveniently located near the San Jose International Airport. Braulio Carrillo National Park Braulio Carrillo is one of the most easily accessible national parks in the region, as there is a highway that runs virtually right through the park. With the Poas Volcano to the west and the Irazu Volcano to the east, Braullio has one of the most scenic landscapes in the country. Home to at least five different life zones and virgin forest, travelers can witness a diverse array of wildlife and aviary species in action throughout various elevations. The park is also home to the inactive Barva Volcano that sits 9,534 feet high above the lush greenery. Spanning roughly 62 square miles, this massive volcano was believed to have been active more than 3,000 years ago. Today, Barva boasts the Barva Lagoon, one of the most visited lagoons in the country. Because of the high altitude of Barva, there is an abundance of wildlife as well as diverse weather conditions. La Paz Waterfall Gardens La Paz is the No. 1 most visited privately owned ecological attraction in Costa Rica, and boasts the most famous waterfall in the entire country. In addition, this wildlife reserve is home to more than 100 animal species, a lake where you can cast a line to catch your own trout dinner and experience a stunning butterfly garden. The waterfall garden is most often visited for the hiking trails that meander through towering, cascading waterfalls. The Magia Blanca waterfall is the most majestic and is perfect for photographers who want to take memorable photographs from underneath the flowing water. City of Heredia Known as "The City of Flowers," Heredia is a beautiful community tucked between small mountainous towns. The crown jewel of the city is Central Park, or Parque Central, which is surrounded by unique architecture and lined with mango trees. Ancient buildings that border the park date back to the 18th century, including the Basilica of the Immaculate Conception, which was built in 1797. The House of Culture, or La Case de la Cultura, is also situated on park grounds and is one of the top attractions in the city. As the old home of President Alfredo Gonzalez Flores, the building in itself is historic. It also contains artifacts and unique exhibits for travelers to learn more about the culture of the city. Barva The small nearby town of Barva is quaint, and dates back to the 16th century. Boasting a colonial atmosphere and unique architecture, Barva is an ideal stop for any history buff. Basílica de Barva, is one of the top attractions here, dating back to 1767. This stunning church is next to a small courtyard with contemporary sculptures and colonial, adobe homes. The mask-making studio of Francisco Montero is another point of interest, and should not be missed. Café Britt Looking for a delicious cup cafe? Located within the town, Café Britt is one of the most famous coffee roasting companies in the country. It was founded in 1985 and was the first gourmet roaster in the country. Since then, the place has become one of the largest attractions in the country, and has welcomed more than 500,000 visitors after opening to the public in 1991. The tour of Café Britt includes a visit to the gardens and lush green areas, a walk through the coffee roaster, a skit by giant puppets teaching about Costa Rican folklore, history and culture, and a tasting of coffee and chocolate created on-site. El acceso al Hotel es completamente habilitado, carretera asfaltada, el acceso el carro es sencillo. Buses, Uber and Taxis To get to these destinations, or to any area in or around Heredia, you have the option of using public buses or taxis. The buses run daily and nightly, and go between Heredia and San Jose. There are frequent buses on this route, but you should plan ahead by checking the schedule for the day and time that you expect to need the bus. There will be less buses available in off-peak hours. The bus is a great option since it is inexpensive, and it means you don’t have to deal with traffic! The bus system in Costa Rica is a well-oiled machine, so you’re safe using this mode of transportation; the buses are well maintained and clean. If you’re staying in Heredia and just using the bus to get around and travel short distances, buses will be a budget saver. You might have to sacrifice air conditioning, and deal with stopping at a few posts, but this will give you time to chat with your traveling partners or make new friends. You’ll want to look for bus stops near you, instead of for a central bus station. Just plan to pay the drivers when you get on the bus. If you need transportation that is a little less scheduled, you can opt to take a taxi or Uber. Cabs are very common in Heredia, inexpensive, and convenient for those that don’t want to rush to make the bus. Just look for taxis that are officially labeled, and check with the driver before getting in to make sure they know how to get to your destination. Some cab drivers might be able to connect with your destination more if you are able to provide landmarks or distance to/from a landmark, so try to pay attention to your surroundings to make getting around easier.
