The best is probably tne one from Zvolen, but all has more or less cracks and holes. Depending on your direction of approach, you can choose your preferred route description below: WEST (Bratislava, Nitra on R1 highway) Coming on the R1 highway or the main road nr. 65 you reach the valley of Hron near Hronský Beňadik. From here the roads turn left and you shall drive 20 kilometers in the direction of Zvolen. You pass by Nová Baňa, and you exit from the highway for Žarnovica. After a kilometer or so, just barely entering the town, you turn right in the direction of Banská Štiavnica and Hodruša-Hámre. Soon after you will drive through a bridge crossing the highway and the river Hron. Proceed straight ahead and enter the mountains. You will drive through the long village of Hodruša-Hámre, where you will see many industrial features reminding to the mining past (metallurgic plants, smelterys, later shafts and entrances for mining adits). After the village, the last part of the road is full of sharp turns, and is in bad conditions. In winter it can be hard to drive through. If you don't want to drive on such roads we suggest to choose the way through Levice (see below). EAST, NORTH (Banská Bystrica, Lučenec, Zvolen) If you arrive from the East or the North, generally there is only one default way to choose. If you reach the area of Zvolen from any direction, you should pass the town by and drive to the direction of Bratislava/Nitra on the R1 highway. After some kilometers you will see the exit for Hronská Dúbrava but still remain on the highway. Very soon after you will find an exit to Banská Štiavnica. Drive off here and turn to the main road nr.51. Follow the signs, drive through the overpass and enter the Štiavnica mountains through the Kozelník valley, the same in which the local railway runs towards Banská Štiavnica. In 20 kilometers, after the villages of Kozelník and Banská Belá, you will get into the town. SOUTH-WEST (Levice, South Slovakia) Regardless to your starting location you should reach and bypass the town of Levice on the main road nr. 51. After Levice you proceed on this road 8 more kilometers, where - at the small village of Kmeťovce - you shall leave nr.51 and change for nr.524 by turning left and immediately right keeping your northly direction. This road leads you directly to Banská Štiavnica. While you are driving through this broad valley you can enjoy the view as it is getting narrower until, at the end, you are entering the Štiavnica Mountains as well as the district (okres) of Banská Štiavnica. From this point the road is getting moderately winding. After some kilometers in the woods you reach the village of Štiavnické Bane and soon after you arrive. SOUTH, SOUTH-EAST (Šahy, Vel'ký Krtíš, Budapest) If you approach from the South, you might utilize road nr.66 which starts from the Slovak/Hungarian border at Šahy. You shall reach the village of Hontianske Nemce on this road. At this place, in a double crossing, you reach road nr. 51 which you have to follow from here to the north, in the direction of (and until) Banská Štiavnica. After Hontianske Nemce you enter the hills. As you progress, you will travel through the villages of Prenčov and Svätý Anton, and soon after you arrive. If you are not in a hurry, the mansion and its tidy park in Svätý Anton worth a short stop to visit. From here Banská Štiavnica can be reached in 5 minutes of driving. NORTH-WEST (Žilina, Trenčín, Kremnica, Žiar nad Hronom) If you are coming from the North or North-West and want to avoid the highway, the best option might be to travel via Žiar nad Hronom. From this town you should drive in the direction of Bratislava (Žarnovica, Levice) ca. 8 km, passing by some huge industrial plants, and just before Hliník nad Hronom turn to the left for the road to Banská Štiavnica via Sklené Teplice. This road is moderately winding, so it might be hard to take in winter. After Hliník nad Hronom you enter the Štiavnica Mountains, and after some easy kilometers you reach the famous spa village of Sklené Teplice with more kinds of spas and hotels. This village is followed by some curving kilometers in the bottom of a deep valley before you reach Podhorie village, the last one before you finally arrive to Banská Štiavnica. GETTING TO Banská Štiavnica by PUBLIC TRANSPORT (train and bus) If you plan to visit Banská Štiavnica by public transport you can choose a combination of trains and buses. Direct connections are very rare. Generally you have many possible routes but each route has just a few and not-always-good connections per day so getting here by public transport always needs some strategic planning. For this reason we strongly recommend to plan well your schedule in advance! The valley of the Hron river functions as a busy rail and road traffic corridor where the R1 highway and the main railway line nr. 150 runs through. On this corridor there are more "access points" from where you can enter into the mountains to reach Štiavnica. These are the followings: Levice -> Pukanec -> Štiavnické Bane -> Banská Štiavnica Žarnovica -> Vyhne OR Hodruša-Hámre -> Banská Štiavnica Žiar nad Hronom -> Hliník nad Hronom -> Sklené Teplice -> Banská Štiavnica Zvolen -> Hronská Dúbrava by train -> Kozelník -> Banská Belá -> Banská Štiavnica If you come from the direction of Bratislava either by train or bus you might have to change for bus at Levice, Žarnovica, Žiar nad Hronom or Zvolen. If you are coming from the North or East the best is to reach Zvolen first and you can find some trains or buses. Fares, schedules and ticketing may be found on (Website hidden by Airbnb) via info-service of mobile phone operators, or straight at bus stops, partially. 100% TRAIN RIDE Travelling by train to Banská Štiavnica is a stylish and adventurous way to get here. If you take some inconvinience during the journey you can enjoy the nice hills and forests from a higher perspective above the Kozelník valley and arrive after a long tunnel to the famous town of miners. The local railway line, called Trať Mládeže (Track of the Youth), is a 20 km long minor link which branches out from the main line in Hronská Dúbrava. This junction is 10km to the west from Zvolen, however not all the trains stop here or have connections so you might have to change (and wait) either in Hronská Dúbrava or in Zvolen. When you arrive to Banská Štiavnica train station the historic centre is still 3 km away from you. The way from the train station to the centre equals to a time-travel, starting at some industrial buildings from the 20th century arriving to the Old Castle from the 13th. You can complete this on foot in ca. 45 minutes or call a taxi. TRAIN SERVICE in Banská Štiavnica The railway station is located in the lower part of the town, 3km from the historic centre and about 10 minutes by walk from the central bus station which is next to the BILLA-supermarket. There are a few trains everyday from/to Hronská Dúbrava, where our local railway line reaches the main one. Information about rail lines on tel.: (Phone number hidden by Airbnb) ?) BUS SERVICE in Banská Štiavnica The main bus stop (or bus station, but very small) is placed at Križovatka Street (beside of BILLA supermarket). This is the focal point where the lines start/end connecting the town either with some bigger Slovak towns or the surrounding villages. There is also a bus stop in the historical town centre, at the town hall (Radničné námestie) called Banská Štiavnica, Mestský Úrad or MÚ, but just a few local lines stop there.
