Borgarnes is a perfect home base for traveling around West Iceland. It's a very friendly and quaint town with hiking opportunities, and exploring the picturesque coast is a must. There are 2 grocery stores and a very good bakery; Geirabakari Kaffihús starred as Papa Joe's in The Secret Life of Walter Mitty. Blómasetrið - Kaffi Kyrrð is the café we run downstairs; we serve Illy coffee, light meals, cakes, and homemade waffles with whipped cream. Ljómalind Farmers Market has artisan ice cream, fresh eggs and more local delights. The Settlement Center, in addition to being a fun and informative museum, has an excellent restaurant with a variety of meat and seafood dishes (open until 9 pm) and serves a daily vegetarian lunch buffet (11am-3pm). Just next door, there is also Englendingavik, a restaurant with a spectacular view of the sea, fantastic seafood and craft beer on draft. Worth visiting in town: take a short walk along the picturesque coast to the handmade playground crafted from wood, Bjössaróló, or continue along the trail to the swimming pool in Borgarnes, one of Iceland's best! Borgarnes has basketball courts, soccer fields, jogging paths, and a lovely park, where you can visit the grave of Egill Skallagrímsson. Day trips are easy, as Borgarnes is close to many waterfalls, mountains, caves, and glaciers. Marvel at pristine coastlines and visit quaint villages. Patient hikers may spot arctic foxes and falcons. Killer whales and dolphins can be spotted further up in the bay and are best seen with a tour. There are easily a week's worth of day trips from Borgarnes. Some of these include: 1) Driving around the Snæfellsjökull glacier. (the volcano mentioned in Jules Verne's novel Journey to the Center of the Earth.) The road around the glacier has many stops and short hikes. This is a full day trip. Hiking the glacier is a separate day trip, as is whale watching with Láki Tours in Grundarfjörður. 2) Driving through the Reykholt Valley: visiting Fossatún and the Lava Falls (Hraunfossar) and hiking Hestfjall. 3) Hiking Glymur, the highest waterfall in Europe. Coastal drives, fishing, geothermal hot pot hunting and hiking are great pastimes. During the fall, wintertime and springtime NORTHERN LIGHTS sweep through the skies. The Saga Route is a historical literary travel route that passes through Borgarnes. Visit the artist Páll Guðmundsson in Húsafell known for his stone and drift wood instruments. Walking or biking through town is fun. Visiting coastal areas is best by car; however, there are regular buses to Stykkisholmur, Holmavik and Reykjavik. We are located in the old part of Borgarnes, a wonderful area. We are approximately 15 minutes walk from the N1 gas station where the bus stop is. You may arrive anytime after 15:00. Come meet us downstairs in the flower shop/café and we'll welcome you and show you around! Please inform us if you're planning on arriving after 9pm; in this case, we'll provide you detailed instructions with the location of your room. Feel free to use our kitchen to prepare your breakfast. Also, the bakery has many nice treats and opens early. There are supermarkets located throughout Iceland; there are a few just outside the airport at Keflavik, many in and around Reykjavik and two in the town of Borgarnes. Please be advised that most supermarkets close at 7 or 8pm; longer hours may apply in the summer. Grocery stores do not sell alcohol; alcohol can only be purchased from "Vínbudin" stores and licensed bars, restaurants, and cafes. Weather: The weather in Iceland is very unpredictable and extreme, and it is best to be prepared for anything, even in summer. Layers and waterproof jacket and shoes are recommended. Please take care when renting a car outside of the summer season to be sure it's a four wheel or an all-wheel drive.
