The 1000m2 outside area is covered with grass, trees, and a threshing floor recovered from the 19th century. The rural water tank has been converted for bathing and measures 5 by 3m, with a depth of 1.5m. The mountainous area differs from the usual dry lowlands of the Alentejo. Leafy and green, the surrounding area is replete with human settlements from various historical periods. At 1025m, the Serra de Sao Mamede is the highest point south of the Tagus. It’s peak offers an exceptional view over the surrounding area. The mountain acts as a condensation barrier, creating a natural microclimate with higher levels of precipitation and humidity. The vegetation is consequently rich and varied. The north is covered in oak and chestnut trees, while in the south, the forest is made up of holm and pure oak trees. The fauna of the Serra de São Mamede are equally interesting. Rare birds of prey such as the griffin, the kite and the Bonelli’s eagle can be spotted circling in the sky. You may even be able to see wild boar and deer, which following conservation efforts, are returning to their natural habitats. The protected park can be discovered by taking one of five walking routes. Equally unmissable are the regional specialities such as lamb stew and roasted kid, and sweet treats such as bolemia and sericaia with plums. From Elvas, be sure to visit the cosmopolitan city of Badajoz for tourism and cross-border shopping. From the house, the nearest grocery store, bakery and restaurant are 1.5km away, the cheery 4km, Spain is 8km and the supermarket 10km.
