Giant Kingfisher cottage is built using natural building techniques and materials. It is wheelchair accessible and has two bedrooms, accommodating four people. There is an open plan lounge and kitchen with a cosy fire place and an outside braai and dining area. The cottage is about 1 km down the valley from the main farm house, promise to offer the ideal off-grid eco-retreat perfect for families, friends and small teams looking to escape the hustle and bustle of city life. There are a total of three cottages with a communal boma and splash pool which offers the perfect shared space for social gatherings, yoga retreats and workshops. The cottage is off-grid and runs solely on renewable energy (solar). It is made almost entirely out of mudbricks with a natural stone stemwall. Special care was taken to avoid/reduce more conventional building materials that have a larger environmental impact. A large component of the building materials come from the farm itself and most others have been locally sourced. Each unit has a composting toilet. We live about 1km away from the cottage. There is limited cell reception down by the cottages, but full signal by the main farm house. The Farm is the second last in a secluded valley (11km on tar and 14km on gravel) with no traffic apart from the last neighbours. Here you can truly relax and unwind in a tranquil environment far from the everyday hustle and bustle. The surrounding mountains offer great hiking (demarcated routes include 'leopard trail' and 'rock pool trail'), mountain biking (bring your own bikes) and typical Karoo and Cape birding. There are also kloofs with plenty of fabulous rock pools to cool off in. The two farm dams offer great fishing, including: rainbow trout (fly-fishing only) (per kg), grass carp (C&R) and mozambique tilapia (C&R). EXTRAS: FISHING: free for overnight guests Fly-fishing rod hire Fly-fishing lessons WOOD Camping cot, baby bath and high chair OTHER:Fresh rainbow trout products (fresh whole trout, hot smoked whole trout , smoked trout pate, smoked and un-smoked gravlax (please enquire/order before arrival), as well as 'health' bread and seasonal preserves are sold on site. Access to the farm is on 14km of dirt road, this road is generally in a very good condition (unless we have had heavy rains) and is graded bi-annually. The closet town with shops is Montagu which is 25km away and it takes about 35min to get there.
