Stone cottage in the Natural Park Serra S. Mamede
Our little and newly renovated stone cottage lies on a stream and has views of the beautiful hills and meadows full of olive and cork trees. In the garden you will find fruit trees, herbs and flowers. Not far there is a nice waterfall to enjoy hot summer days. This is a peaceful place to relax. No internet and no TV to disturb you. Get immersed in nature's beauty by watching the surrounding and listening to the sheep's bells chiming. The cottage has one bedroom, a bath room , a fully equipped dining kitchen and a living room with a real comfortable sofa bed for two (real mattress). We tried to keep the charm of the old cottage when renovating: we left the original features of the "lareira" (big chimney) with an old wood burning stove and views of the old natural stone walls. Yet, for cooking you will find all modern appliances. We also have an nice wine covered terrace. We live less than one kilometre from the cottage. We normally welcome our guests personally, but to garantee social distancing we prefer letting you do self check-in. We will be available for you, if you have any problems or questions. In our village you will find all the basics you may need (little market, bakeries, bars, restaurants, petrol-station) and in 20 minutes drive (17 km) you will reach the regions capital Portalegre with everything else you may need (big supermarkets, train station, bus station, car rental, hospital...). Our cottage is situated in the Natural Park 'Serra de Sao Mamede' close to the Spanish border. This beautiful wine and cork-tree region is mainly rural and offers lots of nature and many hiking and biking trails - and not to forget: many wine tasting opportunities. The villages and cities in this region are small, but there is much to explore. Many of the nearby villages and cities are on the list of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Mostly medieval and pre-medieval villages (some of them with well conserved castles) can be reached within a couple of minutes to one or two hours distance from our house. Just to name a few: Évora (one of Europe‘s oldest cities), Elvas (an amazing border-city between Portugal and Spain with an unique fortress), Marvao (and its beautiful medieval castle), Alegrete, Monserraz and Cáceres (astonishing beautiful Spanish city with a lots of history). Public transport: Public transport connecting the bigger cities are available until Portalegre. From there public transport is existent, but very scarce. Should you need it, we can send you the time-table. Hiking: There are many walking routes. We have maps available in the house. 1. We have NO WiFi. Though it can be (I can not guarantee it ;) that your mobile phone has signal and you can use your own mobile internet. But no worries, if you desperately need internet you can always go to the cafes and restaurants in the surroundings ;) 2. Please note that we have space for 5 guest (one 160x200m bed + one 135x200 m Couch-bed and a 120x60 crib), it means : maximum 4 adults and one little child.
