The former royal residence of Rockingham Castle, built by the Normans under the instruction of William the Conqueror, is just over 3 miles away and holds many events throughout the year including an open air cinema and Christmas events. Other local historic homes include Lyveden, Kirby House, Coton Manor Garden and Burghley House, where the annual horse trials are held in September. The local market towns of Uppingham, 6 miles away, with galleries, independent shops and cafés, and Oakham, 13 miles away, packed with eateries, high street and independent shops, are both well worth a visit. Market Harborough, 8 miles away, has shops selling popular brands, a historic market and lots of lovely places to eat and drink, and Stamford, 17 miles, regarded as one of the finest stone towns in England, also make a brilliant day out.
