Sunbird Cottage is on a working farm 30km from Volksrust and Wakkerstroom Wetlands, it is a place to come and relax and recharge, there is great birding, walking, mountain biking and bass fishing on site, there are also kayaks for the dams. The cottage overlooks a gorge that goes down to the Slang River with an indigenous forest and has great views over the valley towards Amajuba Mountain and Battlefields for those interested in history. The cottage is built along a gorge overlooking an indigenous forest with a deck. There are 2 bedrooms, one with a double bed which leads onto the deck and the second has two single beds, the bathroom is in between the two bedrooms and has a shower and bath which faces the forest. The Kitchen and Lounge are open plan and there is a table on the deck and there is a hammock for the deck. The cottage is fully equipped and there is a wood burning stove in the lounge and firewood is on site for the fireplace and weber, we do not supply charcoal. There will be a liter of fresh farm milk, farm eggs & jam in the kitchen as a welcome. There is also a bookcase with a selection of books and games. There are 3 bass dams above the cottage in the valley where you can fish and swim, we have kayaks for the dams as well. Lots of walking and mountain biking options. You are welcome to explore the farm, gardens and kids can help collect eggs from the chicken trailer. Lots of freedom and space for kids to explore on their bikes or on foot. 95% of the time there is always someone on site and we will inform you if we are not here as we are a working farm. We are available if you have any problems or questions. Kids are welcome to help on the farm and collect eggs or explore the extensive veggie gardens. We are situated on a large farm so your neighbours are farm animals, wildlife and lots and lots of birds. We also have 6 dogs so we do not allow pets as we do not want any altercations. We are in a rural area so you would need your own transport and there is 16km of dirt road so sports cars with low clearance are not an option & come stocked with your supplies as we are 25km from the closest shop. There is covered parking for 2 cars next to the cottage. In Wakkerstroom there is lots to see and do there especially if you enjoy birding, walking and exploring. If you are a keen birder there is the wetlands and you can book a bird guide. Great little eateries, open from Tuesday. a lovely little bakery, a great local cheese & milk shop & a few small shops. Also lots of Boer War history in the region.
