The Hawk's Nest is an extraordinary home in an incredible location, immersed in nature yet close to downtown & vibrant Riverwest. The Hideaway is a spacious, private and carpeted room with double bed, couch and dresser, located in our mostly-finished basement. The room is clean, safe and comfortable, with a large window that lets in light though a large window well. It is a basement room with cinderblock walls and a fabric ceiling. There is a fold up floor mattress for an additional person. While the room is ideal for 1-2 people, a double-sized floor mattress can be added to accommodate additional guests. About the house: I was as surprised as anyone to have purchased this large five-bedroom home last summer, now known as the Hawk's Nest. But, the beauty of the architecture and the incredible location won me over. When living here you feel like you are living in the country but are in fact in the heart of a fantastic city. It is quite extraordinary. To justify the resources needed to keep this place going along with my core value of abundance found in community, I promised myself that I would share the home with a broad array of folks and fill the place with really good people. Its working! We'd love to have you be a part of our community here at the Hawk's Nest! While we can promise you privacy, the house is open in concept and well-lived-in. It includes: • A large living room with lots of plants, a frequently used fireplace and a really good sound system. • An attached sizeable kitchen space available for all to use with a communal island, stove, fridge, sink, coffee, dishes, etc. • Two full bathrooms close to all living spaces. • Laundry in the basement • An extra comfy TV living area, which is used for reading and computer work more than for the TV • A board game & jigsaw puzzle area * A working hot tub outside on the bluff with a nice view of the valley below and stars at night * extra bikes for up to four guests * full sized pool table in the basement * fire circle outside There are two covered outdoor eating areas: a large back porch with a nice view and a smaller front porch which the hummingbirds frequent in the summer. Our yard has a fire pit, and an expanding garden of vegetable and flowers which flows seamlessly into an 800-acre publicly owned river corridor right out your door! In the spring, summer, and fall when the foliage is up you cannot even tell that you are in the city yet we are within biking distance of most major destinations in Milwaukee, walking distance of the best coffee shop and Mexican restaurant in town and only two blocks from a convenient bus line. The University of Wisconsin Milwaukee is close by and Marquette and all the other universities in town are not far. We have extra bikes if you want to get around that way, an inflatable kayak that is fun to haul down to the river and in the winter you can borrow cross country skis and sleds too! The three of us living here know the city and love to share info about our favorite watering holes, hideaways, restaurants, and events. We sometimes have other room options for your stay. Search through our listings or contact us for more information. You will have access to the whole house and all of its amenities. The kitchen and bathrooms are shared. Your room will be your own space, we only ask the same for our rooms. Everything else is open to you! This is up to you. The house is big enough that you can keep to yourself in your room, or you are welcome to join us for conversation food and fun when we we are home. We all live busy lives - but when we are around and available, either in person or by phone, we are happy to share and welcome you in as a part of the family. Coffee is available in the morning for you to make for your self and don't be surprised if you are invited to join us for a meal. On week nights we ask that people speak quietly after 10 pm as some of us go to work early. One persons does shift work so we ask the same in the morning til 10 am. Weekends are more like 11:30 or midnight for quiet. Children of all ages are welcome, with a play area set up in the basements with toys left over from my adult kids. Lake Michigan and the beach is just a bike ride away - you MUST watch a sun or moon rise over the lake while you are here! One thing to note: I occasionally offer the main living area during the day as a retreat site for local non profits, but this is rare and your room is always private. If you land on a Friday, once a month or so I host a bon fire with neighbors and friends. If you happen to catch one of these you will be invited in to join us but again your room is private and bonfire guests are asked to leave by 11:30 pm. Riverwest is a cool part of Milwaukee, the most racially integrated neighborhood in all of Milwaukee. It has a lot of small restaurants, corner bars, a farmers market, festivals, a quirky personality and a lot of culture. We are tucked away in a safe quiet corner of the neighborhood - all of the access and none of the bustle. But perhaps the best part is the proximity to the rest of downtown, by bus, bike, foot, and car - it's not at all hard to get into town. The nearest bus stop is up the street and goes right downtown. We are also on the major city bike path, and can usually lend you bikes. And if you are into kayaking, we are one of the few places that can claim a riverway as accessible transportation to downtown! We are about 10 minutes from the nearest access to I-43 and only 20 minutes from the airport. We have free parking in our driveway. We are on the end of a quiet cul-de-sac. We have few neighbors and try to maintain good relations with them. The Quaker community down the street manages a small park and conservancy all around the house, so it is an easy walk to the river. You can even boat from our house into downtown to grab food, etc. - though coming back upstream can be a lot trickier! With our inflatable you can uber back. We are right near access to the Oak Leaf Trail, a bike path network that connects to many parts of Milwaukee AND reaches out over 100 miles into other parts of Wisconsin. In the winter, sledding hills and snowy parks are not far away.
