We want to share with our guests this description of the town of Andes by DONNA PAULAUG. New York Times, 2003 "I FOUND Andes by mistake -- I drove into the village and felt an immediate affinity with the place,'' said Tom Munro, a Manhattan fashion photographer who shoots for Vogue and Details. He made a wrong turn that day three years ago, but now he owns a home in Andes, a town in Delaware County, N.Y., where unblemished farmland and rolling meadows, juxtaposed against the panoramic backdrop of the Catskill Mountains, create a landscape both pastoral and majestic. He is not alone in his discovery. Dozens of other Manhattanites whose city lives are in the worlds of the arts and publishing have second homes in Andes. And they have left their imprint. Artists and artisans, theatrical people and designers not only have moved in, but have also revitalized the Village of Andes, the only village in the town of the same name, by opening appealing and unusual shops on its small Main Street commercial strip. Much of this new life can be attributed to the energy and vision of Brooke Alderson, the actress who played John Travolta's aunt in ''Urban Cowboy.'' With her husband, Peter Schjeldahl, the art critic for The New Yorker, she had already been living there part-time for more than 20 years when, in 1996, she retired from acting and opened Brooke's Variety in the village -- a store filled with hundreds of quirky items, from nickel candy to antique beds. Soon she was encouraging other New Yorkers who owned weekend homes in the town to open shops, and several of them did. ''Andes went from a place that was depressed to a destination,'' said Lee Melahn, who with his partner, Rick Shaver, owns Mercantile, a village antiques shop specializing in vintage linens. ''Six years ago, you couldn't spend more than five minutes in Andes. Today it is often hard to find a place to park on Saturday.'' Mr. Melahn and Mr. Shaver, both graphic and interior designers in New York, own a house in the village and spend weekends there with their 6-year-old daughter, Emmy. Weekenders continue to arrive, drawn by the combination of pristine mountain air and interesting neighbors. Many, like Mr. Munro, have bought and restored old houses. Until recently, prices were relatively low, but they are climbing as the word about Andes spreads. Now, weekenders often build houses on lots of several acres. The Scene Andes is still more about land than people, especially outside the village. ''I walk through the woods to the village and go to the diner for breakfast,'' said Mr. Munro, who grew up in Norfolk, England. ''I don't pass a car or a person for the entire 25-minute walk.'' (...) Andes was once a bustling agricultural community with hundreds of dairy farms; now only four of appreciable size are left. The town has 110 miles of roads, many of which originally led to farms. The roads follow the water courses, weaving a path through the landscape. Many are unpaved. ...... The downstate metropolitan area and Andes have another important connection, aside from the people who go back and forth between them. The Pepacton Reservoir, covering 7,000 acres in the center of the town, is a major source of New York City's water supply. Watershed consciousness is big up there. The Catskill Watershed Corporation, initiated in 1997, protects Andes from industrial development. And a new sewer system for the Village of Andes is soon to be installed, with more than $6 million of the cost to be paid by New York City..... ( you can read the whole article on line) We’ve worked hard to make sure that every detail is covered in making the Doll House stay a great memory for all of our guests.
