Popo House is a simple self sufficient eco house with solar electricity, water from our well but with fast fibre optic WiFi . It is simple eco living in a stunningly beautiful & peaceful location. If you value your independence & privacy than it would be perfect. A chance to escape from the stresses of modern life . It has its own naturally private small beach ( although there are a few coral rocks too ) and masses of reef to explore when the tide goes out . Popo House is a light , breezy spacious house . It has 2 ensuite double rooms with large double French windows that open nearly directly onto the beach! You can sleep with the windows wide open and listen to the sound of the sea. The bathrooms are simple with COLD water showers & flushing loos. There is an high ceiled open plan kitchen / sitting room , very simply furnished , again with windows opening out to the sea. The kitchen is simple with a small solar fridge/freezer and a 2 ring gas cooker or you can make a fire & cook/bbq on the beach. Outside are a couple of sun loungers and natural coconut palm umbrellas to offer shade from the African sun or relax and watch the seaweed ladies and fisherman at their work. There is a small naturally private Sandy beach metres from the house. There are coral rocks on the beach - please note . Popo House is set in our own plot of land where the local goats and cows have free range . Popo does have fast fibre optic WiFi ! The whole house and outdoor space is exclusively yours . When we are in Zanzibar we will be in the small guest house at the back of Popo House. Yusra comes to clean every day . Abdul is our taxi contact. If you could pay him directly please. He can help you with getting provisions on the way to Popo if you wish. Kamal can offer car hire at a good price too. Please note it isn’t a bed & breakfast but the hiring of an independent beach house. I am always available on (Hidden by Airbnb) to help when we are not in Zanzibar . There are 2 Massai who do the security . Both are really lovely & helpful and always by the gate . Juma cleans the beach and outside area and is there most of the day. Generally though the idea is that you are independent. Cleaning is everyday but if you want it differently please arrange. Popo House is in a very quiet area of Zanzibar island just south of Jambiani. There are a few fisherman who hang out under a tree about 500m away and you will see the seaweed ladies on the reef in the mornings . The sea is very tidal where we are going out a long way to reveal the reef which is interesting to wonder around looking at all the marine life. There is a small naturally private sandy beach which is nice to sit / sunbathe/ have BBQ’s on. It has to be noted that there are coral rocks on the beach ( see the pictures) and swimming is dependent on the tide. Jambiani is a 10 minutes ( 45 min walk ) drive away and as well as an awesome sandy beach it has a selection of beachside restaurants and a few local (Website hidden by Airbnb) also offers kite surfing , diving , yoga , Friday night beach parties and other activities so if you want to dip into ‘mzungu’ life it is easy to do. Paje is about 10km away and is busier and has a small supermarket which even sells sourdough bread ! Jozani Forest is nearby as is the restaurant on the island . We are near the dolphins at Kizimkazi but please make sure you go with eco , nature friendly tour company as I worry about the dolphins wellbeing. Makanduki is a small local village where there is a petrol station and a few local shops and stalls. There is also a doctors clinic there. Stone Town is about 1.5 hours away and is definitely worth a visit to simply walk around the old Stone Town . Nungwe , is about 2.5 hours away, in the north of the island and this is the busiest beach area of Zanzibar island ( Unguja) . It is where the famous full moon parties take place once a month . We always rent a car ( let me know if you need a recommendation) but nearby Jambiani is only 4km away and bike rental or scooter rental can be arranged there. There are also local taxis ( we have a good contact ) if you want to go and do some local shopping etc. There are dala dalas that go every even hour from the main road ( a walk along the track ) too if you don’t mind the squash and the African time keeping ! If you are feeling active it is a lovely hour and a bit walk along the beach . It is in a quiet location with only one hotel nearby . You will have to travel to Jambiani for other restaurants , bars, shops etc . It is about a 10 minute drive ., Guests will have the use of 2 bikes free of charge but a deposit of $40 per bike will be taken at the beginning of the stay and will be refunded when you go as long as the bikes are as they were at the beginning of the stay. If they get stolen under your watch the deposit will be kept to go towards replacement . Also the house is near the beach so you can hear the sea quite loudly at night . The windows have no glass only bars and mosquito netting in some places to allow a lovely breeze in but this does mean the sea is quiet loud. There is no air-conditioning and are ceiling fans in the bedrooms - it can be warm at certain times of the year . The house is set in our own plot of land and the local goats and cows wonder around freely making their way to the water hole at the back of the plot ! There are 3 cats, Simba, Moja & Mbili , who live around Popo .
