Beautiful cottage nestled in the tranquil picturesque countryside of Marvao.
Casa de Carvalho, meaning the house of the Oak, is a beautiful and rustic cottage in the quiet and beautiful Marvao countryside. Ideal for those wishing to get away from their hectic lives and take a truly rejuvenating break in this stunning region. The area boasts a variety of nature to watch and study, geckos, lizards, preying-mantises, foxes, wild boar and of course a varied bird population for those who love nothing more than to spot all those visiting our gardens and surrounding land. In the far fields you can see donkeys, cattle and hear the tinkle of bells from the goats as they graze. Narrow country lanes, Roman Roads, Castles and stone walls all add to the charm of this area. There are no immediate neighbours just one or two houses dotted a little way away. The cottage is our home from home and we have spent many hours collecting antiques and unique items from shops and antique markets to decorate it, many come from the local area and a large local antique / flea market in Estremoz which is about a 1 hour drive on a Saturday morning. A truly authentic Portuguese experience where haggling is something to try if you fancy taking home something unusual, or you can just pick up some fresh local produce or some vintage clothing, there is a little of everything. The cottage has everything you need to enjoy your holiday, a large kitchen / dining room, with a fully equipped kitchen, where we will provide Olive Oil to get you started. We have all the usual needs, kettle, toaster, fridge, microwave, coffee machine and a freezer compartment for longer stays. There is a large log burning stove for any winter stays or chilly evenings, which produces wonderful heat and the mezzanine above the kitchen provides the perfect spot to sit and read in the warmth rising from the fire. The bathroom off the entrance hall is fresh and clean in blue and white providing a lovely hot powerful shower, sink, toilet and a washing machine. We provide shower gel, shampoo and conditioner for our guests comfort. The master bedroom with a comfortable double bed has a fresh green look as a way of bringing the outside in, rugs, bedspreads and various collected plates and pictures complete the room, with original shutters adding to the charm. Also the added comfort of a remote control ceiling fan for those hot nights. The second bedroom offers two single beds, we have decorated in blue using a Goa wall hanging to add some sparkle to the room, again rugs, unique furniture and the shutters provide a rustic charm to this room. Also with a remote control ceiling fan for comfort. The living room in reds and oranges provides plenty of comfortable seating, throws, antiques, wooden furniture and of course a television for DVDs (a selection is provided) should you want to relax in the evening after a day exploring. This room leads out to our balcony with stunning views across the countryside, there is a dining table and chairs to enjoy meals on the balcony in the warmth, as well as a comfortable seating area for reading and relaxing, the balcony is roofed allowing protection from the full sun and provides a nice shady spot to enjoy the area. Stairs from the balcony lead down to a BBQ area and through the garden passed the original stone built donkey shed and pig pen to the swimming pool, which is an original olive tank where locals would store picked olives, a testament to that are the olive trees dotted around the property which bear fruit to this day. The pool is a wonderful way to enjoy the sun and the views across the countryside are lovely, there is built in seating in the pool to sit and relax, as well as a seating area alongside the pool on original terracotta tiles (spot the dog and cat prints in the tiles)for lounging in the sun as you dry off. The cottage is full of charm, original features and invites you to stay and relax, we have made it as warm and comfortable as we ourselves like it to be. **The only provision we cannot provide at this time is internet, due to our rural location, currently the companies are unable to link us up (we are still trying) the house does get phone signal and 3G occasional 4G. And we know some guest have used an hotspot box to obtain internet. Also many of the local areas have Wi-Fi so you can check emails etc. **Sorry but pets are not allowed. ** We have a small family of Geckos who live in the roof and if your lucky you may spot one moving around the dining room, we ask that they are left in peace to move about. Bruno, We have a cottage manager called Bruno, who can help you with any issues you may have, advice on anything etc. Bruno speaks Portuguese, Spanish and English fluently and did much of the building work on the house for us, so knows the property very well.
