Rustic, off-the-grid house in the Klein Karoo
Tucked away in the Klein Karoo our beautiful, wild, off-the-grid house is a sustainable gem, surrounded by wild, fynbos with plenty room (pets are also welcome!). We are a farm dedicated to sustainability and practice permaculture systems and have a young food forest on the farm. Water source is Spring water which is also used in the swimming pool. Make a day out of hiking on the farm, or take a day trip to the magnificent Waterfall.* The perfect place to disconnect from the world. Our stand alone house is old conversion of a working space into a beautiful home. The house is open plan and features a fully equipped kitchen, sans oven. Instead we use a solar cooker during summer and we also have a gas stove for cooking. Or, you could just grab some firewood and start a braai under the moonlit sky! We have solar heated water in the summer and in winter shower water is heated with a wood-fired donkey. There is a beautiful fireplace to keep our home warm and welcoming in winter. Creature Comforts: All electricity is solar powered. There is one bathroom with a shower and an outside bath for those feeling more adventurous (highly recommended) Designed to cater for those who truly want to disconnect from the world, we do not have a TV or internet - because life is what happens in between wifi signals! Beds are dressed in cotton linen and towels are provided for your comfort. The apartment sleeps 6 guests in total. One sleeping area sleeps 4 in a double bed and 2 in single bunk beds and a sleeper couch in the lounge area offers a comfortable resting place for 2 more guests. All areas of the space is accessible. Please note on arrival at the farm all guests will be required to sign an indemnity form We are 10km out of De Rust, also known as the gateway to the Klein Karoo. De Rust is a beautiful town 30 km outside of Oudtshoorn, steeped in history and famous for its hospitality. On a warm Summer’s Karoo day there is nothing better than cooling off in the famous moonpools at the Meiringspoort Waterfall - rumour has it that you can spot the elusive Meiringspoort Mermaid there on a clear, starry night. (We’ve yet to spot this magical creature). We also highly recommend pizza and local ale at the local watering hole, The Kaalgat Kudu. You would need a four wheel drive to get up to the property, if not there is a charge of R200 per trip. This needs to be arranged prior to arrival. We really hope you enjoy our beautiful spot, take time out and enjoy.
