Stunningly converted wagon cottage
A warm welcome awaits you at the wagon cottage of the beautiful 16th century Somerford House, set in the Cotswolds close to Malmesbury & within easy access to Bath. Stunningly converted, the cottage retains key features of the original wagon shed. For centuries the cottage was a wagon shed in the grounds of Somerford House. Wagons were parked at ground level and the floor above used for storing grain. Somerford House is a 400 year old Cotswold country farmhouse situated in the midst of a 5 acre holding in the centre of Little Somerford village, 3 miles south of ancient Malmesbury. The house has a beautiful garden, paddocks and ponds; also ample parking and stabling if required. The cottage is available for a minimum of three nights. In the main house we also have available a twin room and a double room with large shared main bathroom (incl. both bath and shower). Continental breakfast is provided. Just around the corner (less than a 5 minute walk) is our fabulous village pub (the Somerford Arms) that serves great food and buzzes every night – it is wise to book up in advance and we would be happy to do that for you for the night you arrive if you let us know. Guests are welcome to enjoy the garden and wander around the grounds. We normally have horses in the stables or in the paddocks. You are very welcome to say hello to them, but we regret they are not available to ride. In springtime there are often ducks nesting on at least one of the ponds and sometimes moorhens. In summer we usually have traditional English croquet set up on the front lawn and we'd be happy to show you how to play if this is an experience you would like to try! Set in the beautiful countryside of the North Wiltshire / Gloucestershire border, Somerford House is within easy reach of Avebury, Badminton, Bath, Cirencester, Lacock, Westonbirt Arboretum and of course the Cotswolds. Whether it is pre-historic, Roman or medieval Britain; or more recent but wonderfully historic National Trust houses and gardens that most interest you, we are in the middle of a wide selection of all of them, and if you want to stay more than one night, daily trips in different directions will give you a wealth of visiting opportunities! For sports followers we are also conveniently close to Badminton and Princess Anne's Gatcombe for the horse trials; Cirencester and Beaufort for the polo; Castle Combe for motor racing; and of course Bath for the rugby.
