If you're cycling we have a lockable shed but have no objection to clean bikes being stored in the kitchen area overnight. There’s a lock box with a code to access the key. There is a first aid kit, fire extinguisher, smoke alarm and carbon monoxide alarm Whole house, no sleeping in the shed - just kiddin' Self check in, Keysafe at front door with key. Self checkout by 10 am when you leave. A safe quiet location in this former Durham pit village. This property is 2 minutes by car from Shotton Airfield and the Parachute Club. Castle Eden Dene is also close by with beautiful walks to the beach at Horden on the Durham coast. The Three Rivers Cycle Route from Haswell to Hartlepool (National Route 14) is only metres from your door. You are close to Easington – Billy Elliot country, if you've seen the film then take a short car ride through the colliery and see how many locations you can spot from the original movie. The Durham Heritage Coast is about six minutes by car. There is a “history footpath” from the car park at Easington Colliery leading up to the “cage” on the hill. The cage was originally used to take miners underground and serves as a reminder of the Colliery's past. Food - Indian, Italian and Chinese restaurants can be found in Seaham, Hartlepool, Durham and the surrounding area. There are loads of take-away fast food providers nearby who will deliver for a nominal fee, we have a selection of menus in the house. Places to visit nearby include Durham City and The Cathedral Church of Christ, Blessed Mary the Virgin and Saint Cuthbert of Durham usually known as Durham Cathedral and home of the Shrine of Saint Cuthbert. There are beautiful walks along the river side at Durham, you can start your walk, follow the loop around the base of the castle and cathedral and end up almost where you started. We like the 10 hectare University Botanic Garden which is set amongst beautiful mature woodlands on the southern outskirts of Durham city and the Oriental Museum nearby. At Seaham Harbour you will see “Tommy”. Standing at 9 feet 5 inches tall and weighing 1.2 tonnes this is a truly amazing and moving statue dedicated to WW1 soldiers. The artist, Ray Lonsdale, has captured every detail down to the veins in Tommy's hands. Seaham is also famous for its “Sea Glass”, we've met people from California, Canada and Hungary on the beach looking for the stuff. The "Look Out" in the marina is a great place for a cup of coffee with great views of the famous Seaham lighthouse and beyond... Nearby, Sunderland has a museum (free entry) dedicated to the region and just over the River Wear you will find the National Glass Museum (free entry) that gives live glass blowing demonstrations throughout the day. Hartlepool Marina is an easy to reach location for food and a stroll. The National Museum of the Royal Navy Hartlepool is based at Jackson Dock, where you can also see HMS Trincomalee, the oldest British warship still afloat. Beamish Open Air Museum, Hadrian's (Roman) Wall and the Durham Dales, all are within easy reach by car. Unique fact - Easington is the only place on earth with dolomitic limestone cliffs on the coastline. Nature lovers will also love how close to home the stunning Castle Eden Dene Nature reserve is a Site of Special Scientific Interest is a series of deep ravines and is the largest area of semi-natural woodland in the north-east of England.  And if you do fancy jumping in the car or on a bus, Durham, Sunderland, Newcastle and Middlesbrough are all easy to get to.  With vibrant cities, stunning coastline, a rich local heritage and areas of outstanding natural beauty on the doorstep, you’ll always have lots of ways to spend your free time.  The famous Durham Heritage Coastline is just a mile away and its stunning National Nature Reserve 2.5 miles away. Packed with natural and historical highlights around every headland, it is a great place to explore and enjoy the fresh sea air. The popular coastal town of Seaham is a 15 minute drive away.  There is a local bus service to Durham city. Rail stations at Horden, Durham, Hartlepool and Seaham. Local taxi company available Important to note. Parking is right outside the front door, our neighbours have cars and obviously want to be able to park outside of their own property. If you have more than one vehicle please let us know and we can advise you about parking additional vehicles at the rear of the house. There is no dining table in the house, just a small breakfast bar with 2 stools. The local co-op, open until 10 pm, is a few minutes walk away. The lovely Hart to Haswell cycle track is just along the block, perfect for dog walking. This is one of four places we have on Airbnb, leave us a message if you require a smaller or larger place to stay. You should see links on Airbnb if they are free. Please try to leave the house as you found it, with dishes washed and put away. The cleaning fee is to pay our cleaner to clean the house and to do and to do the laundry, cheers, Pauline and Bill
