Examples to keep a look out for in the surrounding landscape are the curlew, lapwing and the black grouse. Alternatively there is fly fishing for trout on Hury Reservoir, or water sports including sailing and windsurfing on nearby Grassholme Reservoir. A little further afield, but still within a 10 mile drive, there are opportunities to go clay pigeon shooting, golfing or enjoy a gentle stroll to High Force waterfall. The quaint little villages between Buckswell Cottage and the historic market town of Barnard Castle are also well worth a visit. Between them they have a good variety of shops including, butchers, bakers, fish and chip shops, pubs, cafés, bistros arts and craft shops and antique shops. The Bowes Museum, Raby Castle and Eggleston Abbey can be reached within a 30-minute drive. Shop 5 miles, pub and restaurant 4 miles. Adults only, no children. Up to 2 dogs only.
