The Old Manor Coach House is a Grade II Listed Building annexed to the historic 16th and 17th Century Old Manor House in Baunton, formerly the weekend retreat of the Abbots of Cirencester, before the Dissolution of the Monasteries by Henry VIII in 1536. Queen Elizabeth I gave The Old Manor House to her physician, Dr Richard Masters and the present owners are only the second family owners since then. Parts of The Old Manor House have mediaeval features. It is thought that King Charles II slept in the King’s Chamber on the night of the 11th September 1651, when escaping from his defeat at the Battle of Worcester. The Old Manor Coach House was rebuilt in the 1990’s and has just undergone a fabulous complete refurbishment. Baunton is nestled in the Churn Valley two miles north of Cirencester, the Capital of the Cotswolds. Cirencester is the home of the Royal Agricultural University, the oldest agricultural college in the English-speaking world founded in 1840. The town’s Corinum Museum has an extensive Roman collection. The Roman name for the town was Corinium, which is thought to have been associated with the ancient British tribe of the Dobunni, having the same root word as the River Churn. The earliest known reference to the town was by Ptolemy in AD 150. The River Churn, the longest tributary of the River Thames flows through The Old Manor House water meadows and guests can enjoy the tranquillity of the river or by arrangement fly fish for both wild and stocked brown trout from the stone built banks of the mill pond or along 300 metres of river frontage. Guests may also use the rose garden adjoining the Coach House and there are barbecues both on the river and in the rose garden. The gardens and water meadows are a designated “Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty”, classified as “A Site of Scientific Interest” and are within a Conservation Area. More than 120 species of bird have been recorded and Otter, Mink, Roe, Fallow and Muntjac Deer, Badger, Fox, Hedgehog and Dormouse are resident species amongst others. The Space Access to the south west facing Coach House is through the Court Yard entrance to The Old Manor House with its own staircase to a landing with a farmhouse painted hall bench with cushion and baskets for shoes and gloves and coat rack and quiet reading area. There is an elegant “farmhouse” cloak room with loo, basin, heated towel rail and four drawer shoe bench with cushions. The door to the drawing room is fitted with its own lock. The drawing room itself has an elegant dining area on the left with sideboard and round extendable dining table with six chairs. The seated area faces the faux wood burning stove with 43 inch Sony Smart TV (Netflix, Freeview HD) mounted on a corner table. The two windows with custom painted wooden blinds have views of the gardens, stable yard and water meadows with 400 metres of river frontage. The country style Burford blue kitchen is to right of the drawing room and is well equipped with gas stove, dish washer, American style fridge freezer with filtered water and ice machine, microwave, kettle and toaster and silver and table ware for six place settings. The principal bedroom has a Wickham washed oak king size bed with matching bedside tables, two rustic wardrobes and dressing table with a view to the river Churn and mill pond. There is a rustic corridor with linen storage leading to the second bedroom that has twin Westcote blue single beds, matching wardrobe and full length oak framed mirror. The view is across the field to the north of the village. The stunning bathroom has a tiled walk in wet shower with LED lighting, freestanding blue Duke double ended roll top bath, Trafalgar countertop vanity cabinet and oval basin, with LED mirror, loo and heated towel rail. There is super fast Gigaclear WiFi throughout. Guests have free access to The Old Manor House laundry with 11 kg washing machines and tumbler dryers. Guests may use the Rose Garden which has a dining table with four chairs and sun umbrella and a barbecue. Alternatively they are welcome to barbecue on the banks of the river mill pond. Parking is in the Stable Yard. Stables / stable yard by prior arrangement I am available if necessary. We are in a typical Cotswold village on the river Churn close to Cirencester, we have wonderful and exceptional riding in the area and have 3 loose boxes if you wanted to bring horses by prior arrangement.
