A beautiful historical Yorkshire stone cottage, in the centre of Horbury Bridge. This cottage is in the original row where Sabine Baring Gould wrote the Hymn “Onward Christian Soldiers”. With a private garden & patio to the rear, this is an ideal spot to base yourself to explore all stunning Yorkshire has to offer. There is also a barber shop at the front of the property Shopping nearby includes Leeds/Manchester. Canal walks & country pubs close by & dog friendly accommodation. The cottage is where the hymn “Onward Christian Soldiers” was written when the entire row of cottages used to be a “home for wayward young girls!” So it is full of history and very quirky in its lay out. You access the property via the front door to the side of the barber shop. But the cottage used to own the land to the side where the newer houses were built in the 1970s, so our cottage still has access to the rear garden via the driveway. This is how you reach the hard standing parking space to the rear of the property. (Please be kind to our neighbours and don’t leave the gates on our garden drive open as it makes it difficult for them to park their cars) To park just drive down the driveway, veer left at the top and tuck in by the left hand garage, open our gates and reverse into the hard standing. This way it’s easier to exit too! 😉 We do share our downstairs loo with staff in the shop who very *occassionally* use it but there is a locked door between the loo and the house so your valuables will be safe and secure with no staff access other than to the loo. (Sadly they have no loo in the shop so this is to prevent crossed legs!) Apart from this, you have the full run of the house and rear garden. Our neighbours are lovely and are always ready with a smile/hello so feel free to chat to them if you see them over the fence. You have access to the entire house, the rear garden with the parking space (feel free to potter in the rear garden if you enjoy a spot of gardening and taking cuttings from our plants is allowed if you see something you like and are UK based. Sorry overseas visitors but UK customs won’t let you return home with cuttings from us! 😔) You can use the side garden freely too. The gate sometimes sticks on the flag stone, just just lift it a little as you close it and it should be ok. 👍🏼 We unfortunately live away from this property at the moment even though it is our main home, so we won’t be there with you. However if you need anything...and we do mean anything...babysitters, florists, car repairs etc just ask us because we know any and everyone around and about Horbury Bridge so can help with almost any request/problem. The cottage is perfectly placed for exploring the area. There’s brilliant walks along the canal just yards from the cottage or hill walking in the Pennines a short car ride away. Indoor snow slopes, Indoor children’s play areas, Escape Rooms, the coal mining museum, the Hepworth Art gallery & the Yorkshire Sculpture Park are just some of the tourist attractions on the doorstep of the cottage. Shopping in Leeds, York, Huddersfield and Harrogate are all short car or bus/train rides away (with a bus stop just yards away again on the main road.) Theatres & concert venues are in Leeds, Wakefield, Dewsbury, Harrogate and of course the famous Holmfirth Hippodrome where *BIG* A list groups go to warm up when on tour is just down the road. Restaurants and cafes are plentiful with Capri (Italian) restaurant a short stroll away, Quarry tapas bar is up the hill and 2 traditional pubs are just a few doors away serving hearty Sunday roasts and traditional pub food during the week. There are two local cafés too across the road for hearty Full English slap up breakfasts if you don’t fancy cooking! If you’re looking to celebrate a special occasion, a newly opening Champagne bar is across the road too. There’s also a convenience store and post office over the road and a hair dressers a few doors down too. Of course with a traditional sweetshop at the front of the property too, there’s always plenty to do whether you like the indoor or outdoor lifestyle. There are 6 buses going from Horbury Bridge to various towns locally (Leeds, Wakefield, Huddersfield) and you can find the time tables here 👉🏼 (Website hidden by Airbnb) If you head to Wakefield you can catch the train onwards to Leeds/London/Manchester/York etc. If you head to Dewsbury on the bus you can then catch the train to Huddersfield/Manchester/Halifax etc. On foot you can walk for miles along the canal towpath with lots of lovely pubs along the route every so often (head to Ossett and try the real ale at the brewery just off the canal path at Healy Road or head to Wakefield and try the Junction Inn for a sit down by the canal. Of course there’s the Horse and Jockey pub in the summer where you can catch the village team play cricket with a pint or the Bingley Arms owned by the Tripp family, where you can sit out and watch the canal boats gently drift by. There’s also a wealth of wildlife on the canal, be sure to listen out for our local owls at dusk too. Car will get you most places and the area is very well served with motorways as well as B roads. Cycling is also a popular option with plenty of pathways locally that are safe for children too. (The towpaths on the canal are nice and wide and canals are only waist deep too if they do fall in like our middle child once did!) Shank’s Pony as we call walking in Yorkshire is also popular with Coxley Wood and Valley being a short stroll away which is wonderfully safe for children/families to explore. Thrones park has a miniature ride on railway and Wilton Park in Batley also has great walks in the woodland behind the park. Ossett Park is up a steep hill behind the cottage but is worth the walk as there is a fish n chip shop there too. All parks have outdoor play areas/Climbing frames/swings for children too. The house has full central heating and hot water on an instant combi boiler. If you have any questions about how this system works please just ask us. There’s also a number of squeaky floor boards in the house too...again the timbers are hundreds of years old so this is why...and please don’t forget the random step between the landings too. Another feature of living in a cottage nearly 200 years old. 👍🏼 Just to let you know as well, the rear of the house is being re-rendered but we can’t do it until the summer because of the weather. So apologise for how it looks, but it doesn’t affect the use ability of the house. Please note the cleaning fee includes the services of a professional company for all rooms in the house plus fully cleaning all bedding and towels for your stay. After feedback of our previous cleaner as to the quality of their work we changed to a better cleaner, who in turn charges us more for a better service.
