16th century thatched country cottage with pretty garden set in a picturesque historic village in rural Suffolk and only 100yards from quiet country pub. Dalham is popular with hikers for its six circular walks and with cyclists for its uninterrupted gently undulating hills. Nearby are several beautiful historic small towns such as Clare, Cavendish and Lavenham as well as the renowned horse racing centre of Newmarket, university city of Cambridge and historic market town of Bury St Edmunds. The leaded glass French doors of the large country kitchen open out onto the cottage gravel garden where there is a bistro table should you feel like breakfast outside in the summer. Passing the well, steps lead you up into the private traditionally walled orchard garden where there are tables and chairs to relax. Views of other pretty cottages (our neighbours) are a delight to behold, whilst not being overlooked. Both the gravel and the orchard garden are for guests to use. Special attention has been given to furnishing and decorating our cottage in all areas to be in keeping with the history and charm of the cottage, with antique country furniture from its entire history combined with art mostly by the hand of your host and hand crafted ware. The bedroom is accessed by its own private staircase leading to a landing area where you can sit and make tea and coffee. The garden is free for all guests to use but also for our dogs and cats who are all very friendly. Guests are welcome to make breakfast themselves with tea, coffee and toast supplied free of charge. Booking in time is normally any time after 6.00pm. We can sometimes do earlier so do let you know if this affects your booking. If you are intending to bring dogs please contact us first as we may need to make special arrangements with our own animals. We can put up an air bed with bedding for a third guest for a supplement of £10.00. The Afleck Arms does not do meals every evenings. The Star at Lidgate (next village to the south) does excellent pub food Dalham is situated in a conservation area and contains many buildings thatched in straw or Norfolk reed. It also has an historic Windmill and Church and a curious Malting Kiln. It is only a small village of about 150 adults but contains around 50 listed buildings. Guests travelling by train to Newmarket can find a mini cab rank and bus stop for Dalham within close proximity to the station. Parking at "Pear Tree Cottage" is on public road directly opposite.
