City of Königstein with fortress Königstein The Königstein Fortress rises 361 meters above the Elbe. If you stand at the foot of the Königstein Fortress, you can already imagine the impregnability of this fortress. In order to make the mountain habitable at all, in the second half of the 16th Century, a 152.47 meter deep well was dug on the Königstein and in 1586 the first waterlift was installed, the large pedal wheel of which was set in motion by soldiers and front workers until 1871.
