My traditional island style studios are a few minutes walk from the safe sandy beach of Kini; a small village on the island of Syros. Each apartment has a kitchen area with sink, electric hob, fridge, private balcony and air conditioning. Some have sea views and an oven. The studios are surrounded by attractive gardens with safe play areas for children. I am a farmer, and close by is my garden, where I grow fruit and vegetables and have chickens. Rooms are well appointed and I try to maintain a friendly and relaxed atmosphere with traditional Greek hospitality. The studios have free wifi access and are different sizes. All rooms have en suite bathrooms with hot water. The studios are close to the local mini market and there is a public bus service to the main town of Hermoupolis; about nine kilometres away. A selection of bars and tavernas are within easy walking distance. I live on the premises and I will meet you at the port or airport when you arrive and give you information about the island and the area. The rooms are cleaned daily and there is a laundry service if required. If you like to walk, I have maps and can advise you about the old donkey paths that surround the village. Each Easter and for the olive harvest in November, I organise special trips, so you can experience the traditional culture of Greek village life. A boat leaves from Kini, to visit the isolated northern beaches and weather permitting, it is sometimes possible to have beach barbecues. If you wish to hire a car or moped, we can help you. The main town and port of Hermoupolis is a fine city, with many shops, tavernas and bars. A couple of museums exhibit the cultural history. Syros had a Cycladic settlement more than three thousand years BC and in the nineteenth century was an industrial centre for all of Greece. Each July, there is a world class Festival of the Aegean, based in the attractive Apollon theatre, which is a replica of La Scala in Milan. Throughout the summer, there are art exhibitions and regular Greek dancing performances in the town's large marbled square. You can also explore the tiny streets of Ano Syros, the ancient capital. If you feel energetic, you can climb from Kini along the old pirate's path. Kini is a small village. Outside the main tourist season of July and August, there are not many people around and the beach will be quiet. Good weather usually continues well into November and the sun is shining here, when the first frosts hit northern Europe. The sea is safe and tideless and a few traditional fishing boats cast their nets off shore and the catch is sold at the village fishmonger. Local farmers offer their eggs and vegetables and in August, figs drop from the trees. There is a bus service into the local town and around the island. Taxis are available too. Outside of the main tourist season, you may prefer to hire a car for your convenience. Rental rates are reasonable and the hilly northern part of the island is worth a visit. a couple of tavernas there offer spectacular views across the Aegean to the islands of Tinos, Andros and Yiaros. Trips to other islands are possible, depending on the ferry schedules. Syros has a daily boat from Pireaus all year round, with more in the summer. A small airport offers flights to Athens every day except Saturday. You can fly from most airports to Athens, then transfer by ferry (four hours) or plane (thirty minutes)to Syros. It is possible, in the summer to fly to Mykonos and get a ferry to Syros (one hour). If you would like to extend your holiday by staying in Athens or another island, we can advise you. Syros has an island climate and the winds are not always predictable! We recommend you take adequate travel insurance in case your journey is disrupted. Internal flight and ferry schedules are not published much in advance and are subject to change. We suggest you consider your onward connections, when deciding on your departure date! We can advise you about your journey.
