Victorian school in quiet village. Ely 6m/ Cambridge 18m. Open plan sitting room/loft bed room & double sofa bed downstairs. Well equipped kitchen with table for meals/work. Internet. Spacious shower room. French doors to private patio garden. Good walks/bike rides, bird watching on Ouse washes, 13thC Church, village pub, unique Fen landscape, Wicken Fen, ancient cities of Ely & Cambridge. Own towel option for short stays. Indoor bike storage. The building, dating from 1873 was converted in the 1990s and further renovated in 2019. It retains the gothic doors, sash windows and width and height of the original school hall. There is an open plan sitting room and mezzanine sleeping area. Spacious fully equipped kitchen, washing machine, table and chairs etc. Reliable Wi-Fi for home working. (Discount for repeat weekday work stays). Good sized shower room (described by one guest as the best shower in 3 months in the UK ). Bed linen largely organic (Muji). Building one room wide with east and west facing windows giving morning and evening sun. The enclosed garden has a good dose of midday sun. Tea, coffee and ingredients for a light breakfast for your first morning will be available (dietrary options on request). The heat and hot water are provided by an air source heat pump and the electricity is from a green energy supplier. If you would like to bring your own towels (in the interests of the environment) for 1-2 night stays - please message and we will give you a reduction on your first night. (No TV, but there is an aerial so bring device/portable TV for anything thing you can't miss! ) Free parking is on the street - but do drive down the drive to unload. Good train connections from Ely to Cambridge, London, Kings Lynn, Peterborough and Norwich. Regular bus to Ely except on Sunday. Good for biking but if coming from Ely don't take the byway indicated on some maps as it can be rough and muddy but continue on the road through Wardy Hill . We live in the adjacent house so will be around and about if needed but the property is totally self contained. The village has some lovely ancient droves, good walks and bike rides. There is a pub (Covid restrictions allowing) which serves food ( home made pizza) and good pubs in the neighbouring villages of Sutton and Mepal, both of which also have convenience stores. Ely with its beautiful cathedral, Cromwell's House, Stained Glass Museum, Toppings independent bookstore, antiques centre, Thursday and Saturday markets, riverside marina and numerous coffee shops and eateries is 6m. Wicken Fen National Nature Reserve 10m; Cambridge, Newmarket & Anglesey Abbey all within 20m. Flag Fen Archaeology Park and Peterborough c.25m. The wide open skies and light of the Fens are very special. North Norfolk coast just over an hours drive. There is a co-op on the A142 neat Sutton. There is a good train line from Ely to Cambridge and Ely to Kings Lynn. Fencabs, Alan's Taxis and A10Taxicabs bookable from station. Cross-country bike route from Ely (via Wardy Hill ) c7 miles, plus bike path along A142. Ely Zipper bus service Mon-Sat (takes a while!). The village backs on to single track roads to the north - good for walking and biking. There is also a bike route along the river from Ely to Cambridge. . The kitchen has an oven, hob and microwave, the fridge has a small freezer compartment, washing machine. There is a table to eat/work at. The sofa bed is relatively small so may not be suitable for larger adults. Please let us know on booking if you require the sofa bed. ( If the booking is for 2 only there is a small one off charge to cover additional costs. For 2+ guests see standard additional guest charge) Older children are welcome if they are happy to sleep on the sofa bed , or you can bring your own travel cot for babies. The flat is probably not suitable for toddlers - there is no stair gate or other child safety features so please discuss before booking. Parking is on the street but please try to avoid parking directly outside no 28, the old red brick house just before our drive. You may temporarily drive down the drive to unload. The stairs are relatively steep. We have two dogs, contained within our part of the property but please be careful to shut the gate. The hot water and heating are provided by an air source heat pump - hence no need for a carbon monoxide detector.
