It’s a well equipped town with convenience store, garage, restaurants, bars and hairdressers. Just outside the town we recommend a visit to the “Saltwater Brigg” with its lovely beer garden and “Harrison’s” with its fabulous terrace with sweeping Lough views. You are only a short drive to the historic village of Greyabbey renowned for it’s wonderful 12th century Cistercian Abbey set in beautiful parkland. The village has a number of historic buildings and a selection of antique and vintage shops (open Wednesday, Friday and Saturday). We recommend a visit to the restaurants Alchemy and Wildfowler Inn (dog friendly). The village also has some excellent coffee shops (be sure to try Lekker, Alchemy and Hoops). There is also an excellent farm shop and deli “Angus Farm Shop”. For additional provisions, the large supermarket of Tesco is just 10 minutes drive away in the town of Newtownards Nearby Attractions.... The stunning National Trust properties at Mount Stewart and Castleward are close by. Mount Stewart is renowned for its stunning house and gardens. It also has fabulous walking trails, a coffee and gift shop and an outdoor woodland adventure park. There are many popular events throughout the year including jazz concerts and vintage fairs. It is less than 5 minutes drive from the cottage. Castleward is the spot for Game of Thrones fans renowned as Winterfell! Just drive to Portaferry (15 minutes) and take the short, scenic ferry to Strangford. Strangford Lough, a beautiful marine nature reserve, is a designated area of 'outstanding natural beauty' perfect for taking to the water or enjoying scenic walks. There are opportunities for horse riding, fishing, birdwatching and sailing all within a few miles of the village. Less than 5 minutes drive is the village of Ballywalter which has a stunning beach to enjoy. You can also drive along Belfast Lough to the picturesque town of Donaghadee (20 minutes away) with its lovely harbour, lighthouse, coffee shops, seafood restaurants and recently opened Copeland Distillery. The town of Bangor (25 minutes away) has a large marina, great selection of shops and a large marina with “Pickie Park” popular with young children for its train ride, miniature golf and giant swan rides. Castle Espie a bird sanctuary run by the Wildlife and Wetlands Trust is within easy reach for a days outing and has a great outdoor adventure park. The Ulster Flying club at Newtownards Airport (10 miles) offers pleasure flights down the lough. We also recommend a visit to the pretty National Trust village of Kearney, just outside Portaferry (great for rock pooling). Other Attractions.... All the major attractions of Northern Ireland are accessible including Belfast just 40 minutes away with the award-winning attraction the “Titanic Centre”, HMS Belfast, Cathedral Quarter, Crumlin Gaol, an array of historic buildings and a multitude of shops and restaurants in Victoria Square.
