A newly refurbished 1840s Paper Mill Boiler House, set within the rolling hillsides of the Calder Valley. Offering breath-taking views from the fully glazed frontage overlooking the woodland and river. The property is located on the longest continuous elevation road in England and is famous for road cycling, having been part of the Tour de France route back in 2014. This lovingly renovated property benefits from underfloor heating throughout, so kick off those shoes, grab a glass of something tasty, and sit back and enjoy the views! Finished to a very high standard, the property boasts a hand crated kitchen, with complementing marble worktops, that leads onto our stunning living and dining area with double glazed floor to ceiling windows, framing beautiful views across the woodland. Top of the range beautiful marble bathroom, with a hand made Japanese duo deep soak bath - the water keeps hotter for longer than a normal bath so you can indulge and relax until your heart's content content ! Two double bedrooms sleeping 4, along with a smaller ground floor 'relaxation' space with sofa, TV and games. The lower floor is accessed via paddle steps, so those with limited mobility, or children will struggle. There are 2 outdoor patio areas, one leading off the main lounge, and one leading off one of the bedrooms, so get the coffee on, and enjoy your morning, whilst immersing yourself in the local history and woodland. We have also purchased a membership at the local tennis club for you to enjoy during your stay. Booking is essential so please do speak to us if you would like to book some time, we provide rackets and balls for your use. You will be renting the entire building for your stay. Due to Covid- we are no longer able to meet guests upon arrival, however we are just on the other end of the phone should you need us. Situated on the hills in the beautiful Calder Valley, Cragg Vale is a beautiful village positioned just above Hebden Bridge. Within a mile of the property we benefit from having two brilliant pubs, a fantastic local farm shop and two micro brewery's! Being the former boiler house for the paper mill, you will find many hidden treasures and ruins within the woods, including the clapper bridge, also known as Dog Bridge, it is a sturdy structure of slabs and piers. I have been unable to find a definitive date for the bridge. However, I would have thought it was at least a couple of centuries old. You can well imagine the clump of clogs as scores of workers crossed on their way to work in the valley’s mills every day. You can retrace your steps back from the bridge, towards the Robin Hood Public House, and beyond to find the paper mill. Turvin Clough joins with Withens Clough at a particularly lovely spot by the church (the evocatively named St John’s in the Wilderness). Continuing as Cragg Brook, the stream becomes faster and wider as you go down the valley, and the banks steeper. The ruins of the paper mill straddle the water and date back to the 18th century. There is a waterwheel in situ, although this is not the original wheel. It is still rather picturesque nonetheless. Stoodley Pike is a very popular walk within the area, but we are lucky to live in an area that has more walks and cycling routes than I can mention here! Shibden Hall, the home of Ann Lister is only 8 miles away, Heptonstall (The resting place of Ted Hughes and Silvia Plath) Is a local village just on the other side of the valley, is like stepping back in time, and is full of history. Hebden Bridge is a 10 minute drive away, or a beautiful 40 minute walk through the woods and canal paths. There is a bus stop close to the property, and we have several taxi firms in the area. The Calderdale Way is on the doorstep, offering an abundance of walking and cycling routes. We welcome Dogs and well behaved owners.
