Set alone in a paddock with breathtaking views Combs valley and moor is our Shepherd’s hut. Totally off grid (no electric) you will experience a great nights sleep by the wood stove in peace and quiet with the occasional sound of the wildlife. Just a few yards away is a private toilet/ shower room and an area with a kettle, toaster, mini fridge, electric hob & cooking utensils. Should you need to charge your phone there are also sockets in this room, but better still, come and recharge yourself! Years ago, Shepherd’s huts were used by farmers to shelter from the weather when they attended to their flock of sheep, particularly at lambing time in the spring. The huts were widely used throughout UK and France and followed a similar basic design with a curved corrugated iron roof and stable door, small, high windows and cast iron wheels. The interior was usually simply furnished and was warmed by a small cast iron stove ( if you were lucky). Most huts were built by small agricultural engineering firms (whose cast iron name-plates are now collectable items in their own right). The shepherd’s hut you are staying in was built by local man Alllan Gagen-Hill, and you can see his name plate on the front. Parking next to the shepherd’s hut. Plenty of walking straight from the hut, please remember to keep dogs under close control around livestock. Lovely local pub just a short stroll down the road. We’re not always around at check in and out but I will say hello at some point during your stay. The Beehive Inn is our village pub just a 10 minute walk. The town of Buxton a 15 minute drive is famous for its bottled water. Bakewell and it’s livestock markets and outdoor markets are held on a Monday and there are plenty of local shops and tea rooms there too. If you enjoy walking this is the place for you- Combs moor on our doorstep, the goyt valley, kinder scout, mam tor to name a few. Car is best to go further afield although there are buses that run from Chapel en- le- frith. There is also a train station in Chapel-en-le-Frith which is around 30 minutes walk from the Shepherd’s hut along the old ‘cinder track’. As of 29/10/20 the road will be tarmacked all the way up to the farm so no more bumpy ride! There is no electricity to the shepherd’s hut itself but a battery powered lantern which provides plenty of light. Bed linen is provided but you will need to bring your own towels. Please do not book in the winter months if you can’t light a fire- we’re not always around to do this for you. Bring your wellies or boots- fields get wet when it rains! Please note this is a working farm- cows will moo, sheep will baa and the cockerel will crow in the mornings! Dogs are welcome at no extra cost but must be under control at all times. The first basket of kiln dried logs are included in the price, after that £5/ basket.
