Hylan House in Hunter: Ski & Hike Through History

Enjoy the privacy of 5 acres of wooded forest with hiking areas on either side of the soothing creek. The 4-bedroom house is only a 3-minute drive from Hunter Mountain Ski Resort, and 15-20 minutes from Windham Mountain. Host your family reunion, work retreat, or friends getaway. Come to ski, tube, snowboard, zipline and hike while you stay in our historical 1860s home where former NYC mayor John Hylan grew up. Later, famed songwriter and “Near You” lyricist Kermit Goell lived here too. There are four generously sized bedrooms upstairs, as the house sleeps up to 7 adults comfortably. The home also has two full bathrooms, one on each floor. Its foyer, dining room, sitting room, breakfast nook and large kitchen are all open to one another, forming a great room that is ideal for everyone to gather around. Access the great room from our front porch that overlooks the mountains, or from the rear mud room after a day of skiing and exploring. The bar and TV room (large UHD 4K television) are on the other side of the house, which is perfect for hanging out and playing video-games or watching movies. We even have a Streetfighter arcade game. But don’t worry, you won’t need quarters. It sits on a small service road parallel to Rt 23A (Main Street). This gives you all the convenience of staying in a village home with the privacy of something secluded. Since the property is set on almost 5 acres of land, you get a sense of tranquility and privacy while staying only 3 minutes away from Hunter Mountain and the center of the village. Guests have access to the entire house, including all bedrooms and rooms downstairs. The bar is a great spot to relax at the end of the day with a glass of wine or a fancy cocktail. I’m available by phone at anytime. Hunter Mountain is the highest peak in Greene county and the second highest in the Catskills. The mountain is the site of Hunter Mountain ski area, which is open for skiing and tubing in the winter, and biking, sightseeing and hiking in the summer. You can actually see the ski slopes from our front yard. Hunter has two villages, Hunter and Tannersville, and our house is situated between the two. Both use Rt 23A as their main street. Hunter also has a hamlet called Haines Falls, where the well-known Kaaterskill Falls is located. The best way is to drive to and from the house. Our long driveway fits many cars and there is a mud room off the kitchen where you can sit on the bench to take off your ski gear or hiking boots. There is no public transportation in Hunter, but if a member of your party is arriving by the Adirondack Trailways bus from Port Authority in NYC, the official stop in Hunter is in the center of the village (about a 3-minute drive from the house). But if you ask nicely, the bus driver can stop by the Hunter Mountain Brewery to let you off, which is a 1-minute walk to the house. The house is in the Town of Hunter, right between the picturesque Village of Tannersville and the convenient Village of Hunter. Each has restaurants and shops you will want to check out during your stay. A short drive down Rt 23A and you will reach Windham, with its ski resort, restaurants, shops, and vineyard/winery.
