Romantic 17th Century Paper Mill on The Meon River
Enchanting converted 17th Century Paper Mill over the River Meon in Warnford, Hampshire. Quirky interior with original Japanese features. Trout anglers will have a ball. There are swans, herons, kingfishers and mallards and, if you're really lucky, you might see an otter. As you can see from the photo, the Mill is just by our cottage, but we're not always there so often you'd have the whole garden to yourself. My place is good for couples and solo adventurers. Vintage Japanese screens (delicate!) form sliding doors to the loo, kitchen and bathroom. Guests have a view down the river from the sit-in Japanese style bath. There are oak floor boards throughout; you can hear the river beneath you as you sleep. There's one full sized single bed with a headboard and another slightly narrower single without a headboard. They can be pushed together (as in the photo) for couples to make a double if you prefer. Please let me know your preferred layout when booking. Lovely deep 'sit in' Japanese style bath - you can luxuriate and enjoy the view downstream. There is a small Japanese wooden bathing bucket that you can fill with water and use to rinse your hair. The south facing side of the Mill is one massive glass set of sliding doors with direct access to a wooden deck over the river. There are a couple of deck chairs so you can sit out on the decking in front of the mill and listen to the river gurgle beneath your feet. It's a lovely place to eat out too - the small oak table is very portable! Please just make sure you bring chairs and table in if it looks like it might rain. Please free to fish the stretch of the Meon either above or below the Mill building. You are welcome to use the fire-pit as long as you don't leave it unattended. I may be at our nearby house sometimes, but will give guests space when I am there. A lot of the time no one will be there so you will have the whole garden to yourselves. Gorgeous walks, riding and cycling paths are on the doorstep. Warnford is in the middle of the South Downs Way which runs from Winchester all the way to the white chalk cliffs of Eastbourne. Details here: (Website hidden by Airbnb) Warnford is on the South Downs Way so ideal for cyclists and walkers. Information about the Meon Valley - the chalkstream river and its wildlife here: (Website hidden by Airbnb) We can recommend a very friendly local stables if you fancy some riding. There is a great gastro pub called The Thomas Lord in the next village, West Meon. You can actually walk there from the Mill if you feel energetic - probably takes about 50 minutes. (Website hidden by Airbnb) There are good local village shops with a decent selection of fresh produce in Droxford and West Meon - both about 5 mins in a car. Not much in the way of public transport, I'm afraid. There are some bus services, but rather infrequent. Details here: (Website hidden by Airbnb) You will need a car (or bicycle). About 20 mins from either Petersfield or Winchester train stations. Unfortunately motorbikes like tearing along the A32 (very near the Mill) on sunny weekends and Wednesday nights which can make a bit of a racket. We are not on mains water so what comes out of the taps is 'borehole' water. Basically from the river. I grew up on it and it never did me any harm, but you may prefer to drink bottled water ( I always leave some). The Wifi goes at a rather 'rural' speed..... There is no central heating so it can get chilly at night. There are electric radiators and a wood burning stove, but it's worth bearing that in mind and making sure you have cosy things just in case the weather turns. My lovely gardener, Annette, is sometimes about, but I try to make sure she doesn't mow when anyone is staying so you shouldn't be disturbed.
