Zen Simplicity and the Warmth of Old Hawaii (Hakalau, 15 miles north of Hilo). . The Mango Tree cottage (which sleeps one or two) is a 16 x 24 space, fully open to the outdoors, enclosed by screen. Living in the Mango Tree Cottage is the closest you can be to the great lush outdoors and still be indoors. Guests listen to the winds, the rains bouncing on the tin roof, the cascading leaves, the crickets, the falling “torpedo" avocados and ripe mangoes, when in season. There is one comfortable reading chair, a nice teak table with two chairs and a cozy queen size bed. There is an attached shower and toilet facility and a kitchenette with a gas stove, mini fridge, pots, tea kettle and dishes, shared with resident in the Banana Patch Cottage. Zazen, sitting meditation is practiced M-F, 5:20-6:20 a.m. and yoga sessions are Mon. & Thurs. 6:15-7:45 p.m. Guests are invited to join in. Akiko lives on the grounds and interacts with all her guests when needed. During this time of Covid consciousness, with most guests staying for a month minimum, social distancing and masks are honored. Presently guests are doing 14-day self quarantine, and Akiko provides breakfast for the first 3 mornings, does one-trip shopping for minimal basics, and shares food grown on the grounds and donated to her place. Wailea is a quaint old plantation village of about 12 households. It is a very friendly and warm community where we know each other. Our families know each other. Every Tuesday, we have our community market and we gather to share, sell, and trade food; great food for our bodies and souls. We are located 15 miles from Hilo. A car is a convenience. There is our Hele On Bus service. During this time of Covid, guests fly into Hilo Airport, take a taxi or uber here, and remain on the grounds for 14 days. Our facilities offer the best of "old Hawaii," - the natural simplicity and quiet charm. We are steeped in all that is natural - the windchimes sing, the winds blow through the multitude of trees and plants and shrubs, the light changes - a little rain, a little wind, sometimes a lot, and we live in deep peace and gratitude.
