If you like history then visit the site of Fort Haldane (Grace Charity), built in the 1700s, and see the original British Royal artillery cannons used by Sir Henry Morgan (Buccaneer turned Governor ), to defend Port Maria, a mere short hike or 3 minute car ride away. St Mary Parish church is also 3 minutes away and is an amazing piece of architecture completed in 1861, from limestone. It is next door to the war (WW I) memorial park, where you will find the names of local Port Maria residents who were members of the British West Indies Regiment & fought for the British Empire. The first man of colour to ever be commissioned as an officer in the regular British Army (1914), Lt David L Clemetson, is also memorialized there on the Cenotaph. The son of wealthy Port Maria land owners, he was killed in action near Peronne, In the Somme and is buried in Vendhuile, France. Sir Noel Coward's "Fire Fly," a favorite of the British Queen Mum, is just a 2.5 mile hike away or a 15 minute car ride, for breathless views of the area and a walk back in time.
