Situated in farmland between the picturesque villages of Old Basing and Newnham . Comfortable sitting room with log burner and pleasant rural view. Private garden and terrace with covered verandah. Simple breakfast provided. Private entrance. King bed Good shower Great location for walking and exploring country gardens and houses. Convenient for London, Winchester, Farnham, Windsor , Highclere, etc. Fast train to London ( 8 mins drive to station ) Great choice of pubs and restaurants nearby * My main focus at this difficult time is to keep my guests as safe as possible. I use approved PPE and recommended products, thoroughly clean and sanitise , paying particular attention to frequently touched surfaces including door knobs, light switches, key pads etc. Bed linen is washed on a high heat setting . I provide cleaning supplies for guests own use such as disinfectant spray, disposable wipes, kitchen towel, hand sanitiser etc * Surrounded by fields on a quiet country lane 'Fox Pightle' was a winner in the 2019 Daily Telegraph Home Building and Renovating awards and has been featured in several publications. This recently built, oak framed cottage is beautifully and comfortably furnished and has delightful views on all sides. From the french windows in the sitting room you will frequently see pheasants, deer, hare, and sometimes the fox . There are many wild birds in the garden tempted by several feeders. Though there is not a dedicated kitchen, there is a breakfast/ food station in the hallway. A mini fridge, Nespresso machine, tea, coffee, milk and kettle and toaster are provided and a simple breakfast including choice of cereals, bread, croissants, butter and preserves. There is an electric egg boiler and sometimes my own hens eggs or otherwise bought free range eggs. During these Covid times I will be providing a microwave oven in addition. Visitors wishing to stay for longer periods who like to cook should be mindful that the facilities are limited and they may well be frustrated ! There are plenty of good local pubs, restaurants and farm shops in the area. I provide crockery, cutlery etc if you wish to bring your own cold provisions and there is more fridge/freezer space if required in the open cart shed. The sitting room contains 2 squishy linen sofas, a small table and chairs for dining or working and a cosy log burner . There is a television and the wifi is good . The bathroom has a good shower with plenty of hot water and simple toiletries provided. In the bedroom there is a comfortable king sized bed with quality linen and textiles and plenty of cupboard and drawer space. French doors open onto a lovely private terrace and garden with comfortable outdoor furniture , water feature and pleasant views . WHERE TO EAT There are many choices of pubs, restaurants, farm shops, garden centres etc within easy driving distance. Old Basing has a great artisan Bakery and Cafe and is a 4 min drive or a pleasant 35 minute walk in the summer. The ‘Old House at Home' in Newnham Green, is just a 4 mins drive away. This is a genuine, country pub which serves interesting , quality food and is highly rated by many of my guests. It is not large so booking is recommended especially at the moment. Many local pubs offer takeaways at this time. Old Basing, ( 2 mins ) Mapledurwell ( 5 mins ) Rotherwick (9 mins ) , Upton Grey ( 15 mins ) all have characterful pubs . Odiham ( 10 mins ) and Hartley Wintney (12 mins ), both charming Georgian villages, have a good choice of restaurants, pubs and coffee shops in all price ranges. All can be viewed online. A small friendly crossbreed dog, a three-legged cat and three temperamental hens (whose laying has become sporadic with age ! ) reside in my wing of the cottage. Guests enter through a five barred electric gate leading to a spacious parking area. The front door beneath the oak porch is the private entrance. The bedroom, shower room and sitting room all lead off this space which is separated from the rest of the cottage by a bolted oak door. There is a large rear terrace to enjoy the lovely garden and views, this can be accessed through the french doors in the sitting room. This part of the garden is for guests use only and will only be accessed for watering and mowing . There is seating in the rose parterre in the front garden which is often a lovely sunny spot for relaxing . Comfortable garden furniture is provided in the front and rear gardens where breakfast and drinks can be enjoyed in good weather. Locked storage for cycles is available. I will generally be available during your stay in person, by knocking on my back door, or by phone. Please feel free to ask for advice or recommendations for things to do and places to visit. I always enjoy interaction with my guests but am also very mindful of their privacy. I am often up for a coffee or a drink and a chat but am also happy to leave people to do their own thing. I am grateful at all times for constructive feedback. This area is wonderful for exploring Hampshire at it's best. There are many historic towns and glorious villages within easy driving distance and interesting National trust properties and gardens to visit. The beautiful villages of Rotherwick and Odiham are nearby, and the historic village of Old Basing is just one mile away. In the summer months a walk across the fields to the village is recommended. The old part of the village has three pubs and is home to the historic Basing House and gardens . On this site are the ruins of a major Tudor palace destroyed by Oliver Cromwell during the English Civil War. The area, including a beautiful Tithe barn, is open to the public (see online for opening times) and many events are held here. There are plenty of good walks in the area on public footpaths and Heritage Trails. Both the River Lyde and the River Loddon are close by with riverside paths. Slightly further afield and two of my favourite visits are - A beautiful drive over the Candover Valley ( 35 mins ) taking you to the lovely market town of Alresford, home of the famous Watercress line and full of interesting shops and eateries. Stockbridge in the Test Valley (30 mins ) is equally picturesque and has wonderful galleries and interesting sights and is surrounded by stunning countryside. The picturesque village of Chawton is 20 minutes away where the Jane Austin Museum is situated in the house where she did much of her writing. Selbourne , the home of Gilbert White , is very nearby. Highclere Castle ( of Downton Abbey fame ) is half an hours drive and The National Trust has several interesting properties in the immediate area including The Vyne and West Green House within 8 miles of the cottage. Both Hook and Basingstoke stations are within a nine minute drive. Taxis are easy to hire from Basingstoke station and sometimes the host may be able to help with a lift. It takes less than an hour to Waterloo Station in London by train. A car is advisable if you want to explore the lovely local villages and North Hampshire countryside. I have locked storage for bicycles . Cycling and walking is an excellent way to explore this area. Please ask for ideas. I supply a basket of logs, kindling and firelighters to get you started which will generally last a couple of evenings . However, if you wish to use the log burner a lot, please purchase your own kiln dried logs and kindling at the local garages or at Conkers ( a nearby garden centre 5 mins away ) This is due to the ever increasing cost of well seasoned logs.
