Unique Experience: This heritage cottage was originally horse stables built in the early 1900’s using Sandstone. "Boere" (Farmers) met here for "Nagmaal" (Holy Communion). The stables have been lovingly restored into a comfortable self-catering cottage. There are 2 bedrooms and 2,5 bathrooms, kitchen, and living area. It oozes bygone charm with a large garden and stunning mountain views. It's an easy walk to the Town Square offering many galleries, coffee shops, restaurants, brewery, etc. This heritage cottage is considered to be amongst the oldest in Clarens, having been built in early 1900’s using local craftsmen and Sandstone. It was originally used as stables on a larger farm. The current owners are only the 3rd to own this property. The history of the cottage is unique as it was used every quarter as a gathering point by the Boere (Afrikaans Farmers). After discussing matters they would share Nagmaal (Holy Communion). If they arrived without their own ox-wagon to stay in, they would be housed in the stables. The cottage has several of the older farm features still but has been upgraded to provide guests with all modern day luxury comforts. Guests will have exclusive use of the cottage during their stay and are welcome to use the large garden and firepit. Clarens remains one of the safest destinations to visit in South Africa. Since 2015 it has grown in size as many South African's move here for a safer and more peaceful way of life. The owners live on the same large property and are mostly available to welcome you and assist you. Clarens is a small yet vibrant town situated in the foothills of the Maluti and Rooiberge in the Eastern Free State of South Africa. It was established in 1912 and named after Clarens Switzerland where Pres. Paul Kruger spent his last days in exile. It is known as the "Jewel of the Eastern Freestate". Clarens has a large variety of creative and handmade arts and crafts, galleries, caves, tours, rock formations (Golden Gate), hiking, fly fishing, river rafting, zip lines, etc and is known for several festivals, including the Annual Beer Fest, Lush Fest, Cherry Fest, and many more including a variety of wine tasting events. Clarens is situated 336 km from Johannesburg, 284 km from Bloemfontein, and 389 km from Durban. It is an ideal stop over for those wanting to explore Lesotho or take advantage of skiing or day trips to Lesotho. It is also popular with those traveling to KwaZulu Natal and Cape Town. Cleaning can be arranged at an additional cost. General Please take note this is a historical home and the stairs are not recommended for children under 4 or those who find stairs a challenge. Best suited to good friends or younger families. No events or loud music after 10:30pm
