Period Garden Studio Flat, Irish Gait, Dumfries
This is a self-contained studio flat (with a sofa bed) suitable for one or two people to share. The studio contains an ensuite shower room and a separate kitchen with basic cooking facilities. The flat is situated in the garden of the main house. You have your own front door and can come and go as you please. We can offer breakfast in the main house if you wish but you will also have a small kitchen of your own with a hotplate, microwave, fridge and sink with kitchenware. Parts of the house and yard date back to the 1700s, which make it the oldest habitable house in Dumfries. It is in the town centre but the walled garden at the front of the house create a serene and quiet atmosphere. Being in the centre of town means that the local historic sites of interest are within easy walking distance, as are restaurants, shops and pubs. Dumfries is a great base from which to explore the beautiful south west of Scotland. Guests are welcome to use the garden and the reception rooms on the ground floor. We will be around and happy to help with any questions about the town, but we are happy to leave you alone as well. The front of the house is protected by a walled garden, so the Olive Room is quiet and peaceful. The back of the house overlooks the beautiful river Nith, and the award-winning Dock Park is a minute's walk away. We are close to Robert Burns' house, now a museum, and the Globe Inn, Burns' favourite pub in Dumfries. Also within walking distance is Dumfries Museum, with its camera obscura, and the Old Bridge Museum, at the end of Devorgilla Bridge, one of the oldest standing bridges in Scotland (1621, according to some accounts). Street parking is free in Dumfries, so parking is not an issue. We are close to the bus stands on the Whitesands, with connecting buses across the region, as well as Glasgow and Edinburgh. The railway station is less than ten minutes' walk away, where there are trains to Carlisle, Newcastle and Glasgow. There are also a number of local taxi companies as well, and we are happy to provide contact details for you. We provide a full Scottish breakfast from our local award-winning butcher's, Mogerley's, of local bacon, sausages, black pudding, and haggis. We provide local free-range milk from Roan's dairy, and local bread and tattie scones from our local baker, Francis's. We also provide local eggs and locally-made marmalade. If you have any dietary issues, or would like a vegetarian or vegan breakfast, please let us know. For evening meals, we will happily recommend local restaurants and book a table for you, if required.
