Old Fox Inn Annexe is an independent ground floor wing of The Old Fox Inn, a Grade 2 listed former pub dating from the mid 1700's. Set 9 miles from the historic city of Cambridge with good transport links. The property benefits from the use of a large garden with free range chickens and overlooking horse paddocks. The Annexe has its own entrance and plenty of off road parking. It has been renovated with modern fixtures and fittings and is warm and cosy with central heating. There is a kitchen with a table and four chairs, hob, oven, microwave, fridge with freezer compartment, cooking utensils, dinnerware, and coffee/tea making facilities. A welcome pack with a range of fresh breakfast produce; milk, cereals, bread, jam, butter, eggs, tea, coffee, sugar is included on arrival. Towels and fresh linen are provided. (Washed at 60 degrees). The bedroom as a very comfortable king size bed with plenty of pillows and a fluffy duvet. This room also has a very comfortable single chair bed. The living room has a sofa, lovely to snuggle and read, or watch TV. This also converts into a full size comfortable double bed for extra guests and you will have fresh linen, plump pillows and a cosy duvet. The centre of the picturesque village of Bourn, (famous for it's pioneering work in the field of IVF) is five minutes away and offers the Willow Tree Pub, a very good Indian restaurant, a coffee shop, a butchers, a convenience store and a golf club. There are numerous local walks through the beautiful surrounding countryside. We are happy to help you with any recommendations. The historic Wimpole Hall Estate, a lovely National Trust property is 5-10 minutes away. The historic city of Cambridge is 15 minutes away by car. For trips into London, Royston station is only 15 minutes away and is much easier for parking. The fast train is under 40 minutes journey time. The Annexe provides a fully independent and private suite consisting of a spacious kitchen/dining/living, a separate bedroom (off the living room) and bathroom. Access is via your own front door. So you are left on your own in peace, but we are always on hand to help. You are free to explore and sit in the large, private garden and relax. We have left some books for you to borrow during your stay. Private access is via lock box. Owners live in the adjoining house. The name Bourn is derived from the Old English burna or Old Scandinavian brunnr, meaning '(place at) the spring(s) or stream(s)'. It was spelled Brune in the 1086 Domesday book. Bourn has existed as a settlement for over a thousand years. Roman remains have been found along the Bourn Brook and near Bourn Hall. Evidence of Romano-British activity has been found along the top of the valley on the airfield, and, in the direction of Caxton. Three tumuli on Alms Hill are of Roman and Danish origin and the two which were excavated in 1909 contained Roman coins and pottery, a Celtic button and evidence of Danish feasting commemorating the death of a leader or celebrating a victory around 1010. The medieval village was in a wooded valley and developed along both sides of the Bourn Brook. The farming system of common grazing land and six large fields managed in a three-course rotation lasted until the Enclosure Act in 1809. (The ridge and furrow system of farming is still evident by the undulations in the paddock at The Old Fox Inn and in surrounding fields.) Bourn mill, The Post Mill dates from at least 1636. It is believed to be the second oldest surviving windmill in the UK. The present Bourn Hall is built on the site of a wooden castle that was burnt down during the Peasants' Revolt. A timber-framed house built early in the 16th Century was added to in 1602. The Hagar family left Bourn Hall in 1733 and the estate belonged to the De La Warrs until 1883. During this period Bourn was visited by Queen Victoria and Prince Albert while they were staying at Wimpole Hall. 5 miuntes around the corner from the Fox Inn Annex is Wysing Arts Centre, a research and development centre for the visual arts. Wysing Arts operates a year-round programme of public exhibitions, events, schools and family activities, alongside artistic residencies and retreats. The number 18 bus runs to Cambridge from a nearby bus stop. Nearby Cambourne has a number of bookable taxi companies.
