La Saulnerie, set in beautiful countryside
La Saulnerie has been a traditional fermette which is set in beautiful French countryside with lovely views. The accommodation consists of a pretty guest bedroom with ensuite and full use of the ground floor living/dining area and gardens. We are situated just outside of the village of Saint Barthelemy and close to the small town of Mortain. Guests will require their own transport as public transport is limited. There is however, train links to Paris from towns which are a short drive away. The house is believed to be around four to five hundred years old and has very thick stone walls and oak beams. Outside seating areas are provided in various parts of the garden which take advantage of the different views across the fields and valley. Continental breakfast is provided as is free wifi and use of the TV and HIFI. Garaging is available for pedal cycles and motorcycles and there is plenty of room on the drive for guest's cars. The ground floor living/dining room and all outside spaces are available to guests The guest room has separate access to the rest of the house accommodation and leads from the ground floor living room via a short staircase. Guests will have use of the ground floor living area though we will need to enter this room for access to the kitchen and entry to and from the house. We will be available for most of the time guests are present. The area, especially our village and the town of Mortain, saw heavy fighting during WW2 and there are historical sites to be explored close by. The WW2 landing beaches are approximately one and a half hours drive away and within a 60 mile radius there are lots of places to visit including villages, towns and the coast, not least Mont saint Michel, Bayeux, Caen, Dinan/Dinard, Saint Malo and Rennes. There are lots of walking/cycling trails close by including taking in the grande and petite cascades (water falls) which are close by. There are restaurants and cafes in Mortain and in many of the surrounding villages. The slightly larger towns of Saint Hilaire-du Harcouet and Vire both around 12 miles away. There are train stations at Vire (12 miles) and Villedieu-les-Poeles (19 miles) and airports at Dinard (62 miles) and Caen (49 miles). There are walking routes along a disused railway line which have been made into walking/cycling trails which pass through many small villages and towns, this trail can bring you to Mont Saint Michel which is just 26 miles away if you are up for it. Fosse Arthour is just 11 miles away, on the road to the medieval town of Domfront, where there is a lake and rugged walking area situated where legend has it King Arthur and Lady Guinevere are said to have lived at one time (not just a British legend!) There is a lovely restaurant at Fosse Arthour and picnic areas. We are perfectly situated as a stop off for onward journeys further south or west towards Brittany though for longer stays there is plenty to see and do in the Manche area. Strictly no smoking within the property.Malheureusement, nous ne parlons pas couramment le français, mais nous faisons de notre mieux pour comprendre et être compris.
