The main nearby sightseeing: Volos is built on the area of the ancient cities of Demetrias, Pagasae and Iolcos. Demetrias was established by Demetrius Poliorcetes, King of Macedon. The area of the ancient Iolcos city, is the homeland of the mythological hero Jason who boarded the ship Argo accompanied by the Argonauts and sailed in quest of the Golden Fleece to Colchis. Volos used to have plenty of old mansions, the majority of which was destroyed after the earthquakes in (Phone number hidden by Airbnb) Nowadays, only some of them have been saved, restored and have a new, mainly public, use. The development of the new city coincided with the flourishing of neoclassicism. Public buildings conformed to this style and prestigious private buildings belonging to prosperous merchants were particularly sophisticated. It is worthwhile paying a visit to Archaeological Museum of Volos, Volos Natural History Museum, Modern History Museum of Volos City, Thessaly Railway Museum, Tsalapatas National Museum of Industrial History, Folk Museum of Kitsos Makris and Entomology Museum. To the west of Volos lie Dimini and Sesklo, the most important settlements of the Late Neolithic period and ones of the best known in Greece that provide valuable information on prehistoric architecture and economic organization. It is Dimini's location that made it ideal for habitation from late Neolithic period (Phone number hidden by Airbnb) BCE) in mud brick houses built over foundations made of local stone, all enclosed in a roughly circular external low wall . The excavations uncovered a Mycenaean city and palace complex they believe could be part of ancient Iolkos. A stone weight and a sherd inscribed with Linear B writing were also uncovered. The Sesklo culture is crucial in the expansion of the Neolithic into Europe. Research points to the influence of Sesklo culture on both the Karanovo and Körös cultures that seem to originate there, and who in turn, gave rise to the important Danube civilization current. Mycenaean settlements have also been discovered in Volos unearthing, at the Kastron of Palaia Hill, tablets bearing Mycenaean Greek inscriptions. Pelion is considered one of the most beautiful mountains in Greece and is a popular tourist attraction throughout the year. Thickly forested, with both deciduous and perennial forests, mainly of beech, oak, maple and chestnut trees, with olive, apple, pear trees and plane tree groves surrounding places with water, is an area with a unique traditional architecture. Twenty-four villages retain traditional Pelian architecture and construction, with stone buildings made out of expertly carved local grey, blue, or green slate and red clay. They are built on terraces on the slopes and offer stunning vistas of the surrounding slopes and the sea. It is no coincidence that many villages such as Vyzitsa, Pinakates, Milies and Makrinitsa have been declared as preserved villages of absolute protection. Parking space available.
