Fisherman's Lodge on The River Test - Egret
The Fisherman’s Lodge on the banks of the River Test offers charming accommodation in the idyllic garden of historic Wherwell Mill. The converted barn is divided into two stunning studio spaces - Egret and Heron Lodge. Inspired by the tranquillity of the river and the beauty of the surrounding valley, the light spacious rooms, oak floors and muted colours all create an atmosphere of relaxation. Wherwell is ideally located for world-class fishing and exploring the glorious Test Valley. The lodges were originally a carpenter's barn on the Priory Estate. Now in the garden of the 18th century water mill, the barn has been converted into a modern and beautiful space, while still keeping the original features of the unique building. Egret Lodge is literally on the banks of the renowned Test river, with spectacular views of the water meadows. Wake up in the morning and admire the huge variety of river birds from your window - kingfishers, swans, herons, egrets, wagtails to name a few. Wherwell Church is just a stone's throw away on the other side of the bank and the gentle chiming of the bells is a wonderfully soothing sound to listen out for. Egret and Heron self-catering lodges can be booked separately or together and are suitable for up to 2 guests each. They are adjacent but not adjoining so there isn't a connecting door and they have separate entrances. The studio rooms can be made up as 2 single beds or a super king-size double. Each lodge has a well equipped kitchenette with an induction hob, combi-oven and fridge. The bathroom has a large walk-in shower. There is good wifi and a TV in the living area. The entrance to Egret Lodge has disabled access up a gentle ramp. Egret Lodge is located on the other side of Mill Lane from the Mill House and the Mill, just before the river and a few metres down from The White Lion pub. Egret Lodge is on the far side of the barn, Heron Lodge is on the near side to the lane. Guests have sole access to the lodge and are welcome to enjoy the garden. Guests can park in the gravel drive of the Mill House located on the opposite side of the lane. Simon and Tessa live in the Mill House and can be there to welcome you on your arrival or they will provide you with key safe details. They will be available to answer all queries, otherwise they will leave you in peace to enjoy your stay. Along with the world famous fly fishing on the Test, there are plentiful walks, country pubs and award-winning gardens all within easy reach of the lodge. Stockbridge, Romsey and Winchester are no more than a 15 minute drive away and they each offer a plethora of culture, restaurants, shops and outdoor activities. Also nearby is the iconic Stonehenge, while Southampton and Portsmouth both offer brilliant days out for all. Closer to home and only ten minutes away is the Iron Age Danebury Hill Fort, Leckford Estate Water Gardens and farm shop, plus the world-class Hawk Conservancy Trust. For places to eat locally, you are spoiled for choice with The Mayfly in Fullerton, The Peat Spade in Longstock, The Grosvenor Hotel and The Greyhound in Stockbridge, The Fox in Crawley and in the heart of Wherwell itself is The White Lion which is a great drinking sport and serves delicious pies. The neighbouring village of Chilbolton is a short, picturesque walk across the common. It has an excellent village shop providing all the essentials, plus The Abbot's Mitre pub which offers superb Sunday roasts.
