The Coach House, The Castle Quarter
The Coach House is situated in the beautiful Castle Quarter of Bedford. The Coach House is a 2 min walk to The Embankment (Great Ouse River), Priory Country Park’s lakes, Bedford Blues rugby ground, and independent shops, cafes, bars and restaurants. It is ideal for 2 sharers or a young family (1 double bed, 1 double sofa bed). It has a kitchen, en suite bathroom (Victorian style bath with stand-up shower), living room and recently landscaped garden (shared with our young family). MUST SEE - Russell Park and The Embankment by the Great Ouse river provides scenic walking - both are 2 mins walk from the Coach House. 10-15 minutes walk away is the beautiful Victorian Bedford Park and Priory Country Park with its lakes, watersports, walks and bird spotting hides. ENTERTAINMENT - Bedford Blues rugby ground, theatres for Bedford Fringe, 3 excellent museums (The Higgins Museum & Gallery, The John Bunyan Museum and The Panacea Museum) and the town centre shops are all within 5-10 minutes walk. For live music, Esquires is well-known for hosting some of the most celebrated bands before they become household names, including Muse, Coldplay (twice!), Franz Ferdinand... DRINKS - bedford is well known for its strong independent scene. There are many fantastic cafes, bars and restaurants closeby. The Gordon Arms is the local and has recently been refurbished as a craft beer, street good pub by Brewpoint (Bedford brewed craft beers). We recommend the BeerFly (craft beer), The Embankment (riverside gastropub also by Well’s Brewpoint), the Devonshire Arms (CAMRA pub), Decant (wine & cheese), the Blue Glass (wine bar) and Bears and Tales (cocktails) for drinks. There are many others. COFFEE / BRUNCH - Cibo (Italian brunch and lunch), Foods of Italy, Papillion Cafe (both Castle Road) and the Longholme Cafe (riverside also with a boating lake), Vardo (Vegan cafe) and The Pavilion Cafe (Bedford Park). For the best sandwich … try “The Hummus” from the Gallery bakery, and for Bagels, The Vegan from the Vanilla Tree in St Cuthbert’s. For the adventurous, try a Bedford Clanger from Gunn's Bakery on the High Street. EATING OUT - We recommend the independent restaurants for great hospitality, experience and taste! All of the following are within walking distance. ITALIAN - Bedford is known for its Italian population, (3rd largest Italian community in the UK after London and Glasgow). We recommend 2 Like Us (v small but cosy with superb hospitality and home cooking - booking required), Santaniello's Pizzeria (trattoria style), Higgins Pantry (our favourite for fresh pasta, booking advised), La Fontana and Amicis. OTHER RECOMMENDATIONS - The Korean burger at Herd is better than any we have had in London…. Radhunis (Indian by the riverside) and Thali & Tandoor (Indian), Rice (Thai), Flat Cap Smokehouse (BBQ), Baja (Californian-Mexican), The Swan, The Embankment (both gastropub food by the River), De Parys (gastropub by Bedford Park), Quay (Surf & Turf) and Al’s Plaice (amazing fish & chips). COUNTRY PUBS - 15 mins drive away are the Plough at Bolnhurst and The Black Horse at Ireland both of which are excellent, and on Michelin circuit. EATING IN - try GCH Fishmonhers, Lingers Butchers and Harris & Son Butchers, all within walking distance. Easy to walk to the town centre, river, Priory Country Park, Goldington Road rugby ground. Bedford train station is a 5 mins drive / 15-20min walk, for trains to London St Pancras (35min-45min)
