Large garden, private pool, close to mountains southwest of Carcassonne

Les Cerisiers is a large house on the outskirts of the medieval village of Chalabre, surrounded by farmland and forest in one of France's 'hidden secrets'. The area is wonderful for walkers and cyclists, the mountains are very close and the Mediterranean is one and a half hours away. The local French people are very friendly and welcome visitors. Chalabre is just one kilometre away and has convenience stores, cafes, restaurants, doctors, pharmacy, butchers, baker, etc. The accommodation comprises the complete top floor of the house with separate entrance and separate access to the pool and grounds. The owners live on the ground floor with Frank, their friendly and gentle Springer Spaniel.and there are no other guests. The modern fitted kitchen is equipped with electric range cooker, washing machine, microwave, Neff fridge/freezer and Neff dishwasher. One bedroom is a double with ensuite shower and wc. The second bedroom is a double and the third has twin beds. The main bathroom has a full-size bath with shower and wc, etc. There is free wifi, subject to reasonable use. We provide a welcome pack of basic food items, just in case you arrive too late for the shops. Outside - a door from the dining room leads onto a private balcony overlooking the garden and the swimming pool beyond. Steps lead down to the garden, which has a barbecue area and table in the shade of tall trees. A few steps further lead to the 10 metre x 5 metre swimming pool (occasionally shared with the owners). A large play/recreation area is beyond the pool; as the pool is fully fenced, children can play safely in the garden separated from the pool area. Beyond the immediate garden, a gate leads to woodland and the L'Hers river, or you can turn left or right and follow the field boundaries which follow the river banks. Or just curl up with a book in the shade of a tree and relax in the peace and quiet. Beyond - the area is heaven for walkers and mountain bikers, with literally hundreds of official paths and tracks leading through the hills and mountains. Road cyclists can travel for miles on quiet, almost traffic-free roads. The Mediterranean is just one and a half hour's drive away. The area offers a wide range of attractions within easy reach; the beautiful medieval town of Mirepoix with its Monday market, the dinosaur museum at Esperaza, the prehistoric cave paintings at Niaux (one of the few remaining where you can actually visit the original paintings rather than replicas) and the remarkable city of Carcassonne, a World Heritage site that from a distance looks like a Disney movie set. The hot springs at Ax-Le-Thermes are housed in modern, purpose-built baths and are a great outing for everyone. You are in the heart of Cathar country here, with its rich heritage going back hundreds of years. Fans of Kate Mosse ('Labyrinth', 'Sepulchre' and 'Citadel') will feel at home, and there are many Cathar castles to visit, most of which are perched on mountain-tops. Unvrai petit bijou inconnu. L’environnement est superbe pour les randonneurs et les cyclistes. Les montagnes sont proches et la Méditerranée est à une heure et demie(en voiture). Les gens du pays sont très aimables et accueillants. Chalabre n’est qu’à un kilomètre et l’on y trouve magasins, cafés,restaurants, médecins, pharmacie, boucherie, boulangerie etc. Le logement comprend tout le premier étage de la maison avec son entrée privée et un accès indépendant au jardin et à la piscine. Les propriétaires habitent au rez-de-chaussée avec Frank, leur sympathique et doux épagneul Springer et il n’y a pas d’autres clients. La cuisine rénovée est équipée d’un piano électrique, lave-linge, micro-ondes, réfrigérateur, congélateur et lave-vaisselle Neff. Il y a une chambre double avec salle d’eau ensuite avec WC, la deuxième est double et la troisième a des lits jumeaux ; La salle de bain principale contient une grande baignoire avec douche, lavabo et WC. Dans la salle à manger, une porte ouvre sur un balcon d’où un escalier descend au jardin. Il y a là un barbecue avec table et chaises à l’ombre des grands arbres. Un peu plus loin il y a une piscine clôturée de 10 x 5 mètres parfois partagée avec les propriétaires. Une aire de jeux s’étend au delà de la piscine où les enfants peuvent jouer en tout sécurité. Plus loin encore, il y a une barrière qui mène à la forêt et la rivière de l’Hers, où vous pouvez vous promener le long des berges de la rivière ou vous reposer avec un livre dans la paix et tranquillité. Les alentours sont un paradis pour les randonneurs et les Vététistes, avec des centaines de sentiers et de pistes à travers les collines et les montagnes. Les cyclistes peuvent aussi parcourir des kilomètres sur des routes très tranquilles. La région offre de nombreuses attractions facilement accessibles : la belle ville médiévale de Mirepoix avec son marché tous les lundis, le musée des dinosaures à Espéraza, la grotte de Niaux avec ses peintures rupestres préhistoriques (unedes dernières ouvertes au public) et la cité de Carcassonne(classée au patrimoine de l’UNESCO), sans oublier les Eaux Chaudes à Ax-les-Thermes et les Bains de Il y en a pour tous les goûts !
