Matala Caves is a small seafront apartment that sits right on the shoreline of Matala beach, the famous hippies' gathering place during the '60s.Its private terrace offers a stunning view of the prehistoric caves carved into the sandstone cliff, the long sandy beach and the azure water. The surrounding area includes bars and taverns, where you can enjoy a drink and taste the local kitchen. Please have in mind that there is often loud night music around the area, since Matala has a vibrant nightlife. Stunning panoramic sea view and instant access to the sea,in an unmatchable location in Matala bay area ! Guests are welcome to contact me through mail or phone for any information i can provide. What makes my neighborhood special ? Well , Matala is ideal for those who want to spend their holidays near lovely beaches, large archaeological sites and many villages which retain their traditional atmosphere. Villages such as Pitsidia, Sivas and Kamilari are nearby, with many more waiting to be discovered within a 20-kilometre radius. For those who are interested in Cretan history, Phaistos (Minoan Palace), Agia Triada (Minoan Villa) and the ancient city of Gortys are very close to Matala. The artificial caves in the cliff of the Matala bay were created in the Neolithic Age. Matala was the port of Phaistos during the Minoan period. In the year 220 BC., Matala was occupied by the Gortynians, and during the Roman period, Matala became the port of Gortys. In the 1st and 2nd centuries, the caves were used as tombs. One of the caves is called "Brutospeliana" because according to the legend it was frequented by the Roman general Brutus. In the 1960s, the caves were occupied by hippies who were later driven out by the church and the military junta. Nowadays, Matala is a small village living mainly from tourism. Matala has a wonderful beach, while nearby are the beaches of Kokkini Ammos and Kommos. In case you do not use a car , there is every-day public bus transportation to and from Matala , Moires and Heraklion City. The bus stop is located at the entrance of Matala village . There are many cafes, restaurants, bars and late-night live music events around Matala beach. It is most suitable for people who want to spend their vacations exploring the scenery and the beautiful beaches, listening to music and enjoying their drinks partying by the sea until late.In conclusion,a fantastic destination for those that enjoy relaxation during the day and the bar style holiday that includes nightlife .
