Georgian house, ten minutes from the beach.
The apartment takes up the ground floor of this handsome Regency townhouse & opens onto its own walled garden at the back. The five rooms are full of restored historic features & have been decorated appropriately to make the most of their low ceilinged cottage like charm. Though the apartment is central heated, there is also an open fire in the sitting room. The kitchen has gas cooker, fridge, freezer, dish washer & washing machine. There is a shower in the bathroom, but no bath. We provide tea, coffee, milk, orange juice, soya-milk, fruit, bread, butter, jam & cereals for your first breakfast, so there's no need to bother about shopping when you first arrive. Although on the edge of the town & at the quiet end of the high street, all the shops, cafes, 24 hr supermarket & the beach are 15 minutes walk, or less. For bird watchers, the RSPB Elmley Reserve is only a 10 minute drive! The apartment occupies the whole of the ground floor. The only communal area, is the porch through which you enter, which is shared with the owners upstairs. This porch is still in a rather un-restored state, for which, our apologies! In time, we will get it done to the standard of the apartment...... The owners live on the upper two floors of the building & are usually available - either in person, or on the 'phone - should you have any questions, or issues that need sorting. The Isle of Sheppey is an almost other-worldly place, with huge skies & vast marsh landscapes, which make it a bird & nature watcher's paradise. It's fair to say Sheerness is rather scruffy, but also safe & practical as a town centre. However, if you are looking for the trappings of gentrification, you will likely be disappointed! On the other hand, Harty, Elmley & Shellness are extraordinary, wild places, especially so when you consider you are just an hour away from London. For somewhere so little known, Sheppey has an amazingly important & varied history - 300 years of the Navy at the Royal Dockyard, the birth of British aviation in 1907, the UK's original Co-operative society, the honeymoon of Henry VIII & Anne Boleyn at Shurland Hall, a short lived invasion by the Dutch in the 1660s, St Sexburgha's 7th century monastic foundation at Minster, the capture of King James II at Elmley - all this on an island 9 miles long.... Off the island, but an easy drive, Faversham & Whitstable are both fantastic towns to visit with good markets, independent shops & things to do for all the family. Then, of course, there is Canterbury with well over a millennium of history on offer! Other shopping options include Maidstone, Tunbridge Wells, Ashford Designer Outlet & the famous Bluewater. If you are not here to shop, there is all of Kent, known as 'the garden of England' at your fingertips, waiting to be explored. The Isle of Sheppey is well served by road & easily accessible from the M2, M20 & M25. Free parking is available on the High Street opposite the house & all the surrounding roads. There are buses around the island & rail from London King's Cross & London Victoria with two direct trains during the rush hour At other times, you will need to change onto the little connecting train at Sittingbourne, which gives you a 20 minute journey to Sheerness-on-Sea station, with views across the marshes. From there, you can either get a cab from the taxi rank, or the house is a 10/15 minute walk straight down the High Street. If you are travelling from Europe, there are Eurostar stations in Kent at both Ashford & Ebbsfleet, as well as St Pancras in London. The intimate size of the rooms is one of the charms of the space, but it does mean 5 people is a maximum, if you are to be comfortable. The sofa bed in the sitting room could sleep two children, but would be a bit of a squeeze for more than one adult. In fact, for a second pair of adults, the roll-up double mattress is a much better bet!
