Farm holiday cottage near Edinburgh
The vibrant city of Edinburgh is worth a visit anytime of year. After a busy day exploring Edinburgh's historic streets return "home" to cosy Kyle cottage on Thornton Farm, open a bottle of wine and put your feet up in front of a log burning stove. Our farm cottage is fully equipped for the perfect town and country holiday, just 20 minutes drive south of Edinburgh city centre, situated on our working farm. We are surrounded by gentle countryside, ancient Sequoia trees and paddocks where horses graze and roe deer roam. Kyle (Farm) Is the lower level of a converted farm building. Kyle cottage has 2 bedrooms comprising one kingsize double room and one twin bedded room. The lounge/dining/kitchen area is fully equipped with electric oven, ceramic hob, fridge, freezer, dishwasher, washing machine and tumble dryer are in a separate laundry room attached to the cottage. Comfy seating with TV integral DVD player, freeview and Wifi. Please note that there is no bath, it is a large walk-in wet room consisting of shower, wash hand basin and toilet also suitable for wheelchair access. There is ample car parking right at the door and a patio area with table and chairs. All linen, towels, oil for central heating and logs for log-burning Squirrel stove is included. It is preferable that you have a car, as we are a 10 minute walk on farm roads (with no street lights) to the village and nearest bus to Edinburgh. Having said that, the bus service is good and regular, so not essential to have a car. We also have a local, friendly taxi driver in the village. Eskbank station is a 15 minute drive where you can park for free all day and catch regular trains into Edinburgh taking 18 minutes. The Farm is a 5 minute walk from the cottage. Thornton is a working farm, so you can see sheep, cattle and plenty of horses, as we have a livery yard. We can also offer horse B&B! There are some excellant pubs and restaurants all within 10 minutes drive of the farm and of course the famous Rosslyn Chapel of Da Vinci Code fame is just across Roslin glen, a lovely 40 minute walk or 10 minute drive. Whitehill Golf Course is a pretty 9 hole course just outside your cottage. Two more challenging 18 holes courses are less than 10 minutes drive (website hidden) St Andrews is an easy 1hour 40mins drive so treat yourself to a game there! The many fine historic castles and houses in the "borders", an easy drive South, as is the road north to the Highlands and islands. The Pentland Hills for great walks and wildlife are on our doorstep. We love living here and really enjoy sharing our part of Bonnie Scotland You will have your own home from home to relax as you would at home. In the summer months there is outdoor seating on your own patio outside your door, overlooking a paddock with mature trees. We live on the farm so are always on hand as much or as little as you want. A stunningly beautiful location surrounded by paddocks and ancient trees yet only 25 minutes drive from historic Edinburgh city centre. You will need a car to get to our nearest pubs and restaurants. The Original Inn at Roslin The Papermill at Lasswade Cibos Italian at Penicuik Parking is at your door. Lothian Regional Transport provides Regular buses no 49 and 31 from Rosewell into Princes St, Edinburgh. 10 mins walk from the cottage. Taxi is best from the airport though we do recommend you hire a car as we are on a farm and it can be a dark walk home along farm roads in the winter months. There is a regular train taking 18 mins into Edinburgh Waverley station from Eskbank which is only 15 mins drive from the cottage. There is free all day parking at Eskbank.
