It's September and what a beautiful time of the year! Come soon and watch & enjoy the field spotted with a variety of grasses and flowers. We appreciate guests who don’t need anything beyond water off the deck, parking and scavenging wood. ALSO services available, if we can and if you give me notice, for late arrivals, or less robust/ experienced campers. Text me directly is fastest. You will get CI once we confirm. The site will calculate a discount for stays of more than 3 days. Welcome to the Skunk Barn Farm field and forests ~~~ .... At the bottom of the field, and over-hearing the Canoe Brook, (you cant see it without walking to edge of wooded cliff) there is a 12 by 20 foot platform awaiting you and your tent. Fire pit is near. If you are experienced with hatchet, ax and bowsaw, either bring yours or borrow mine. If you are inexperienced, and I have time, (not always the case) I will gladly train you. A hatchet, though small, is a dangerous thing. The steep woods are mature hardwood - birch, hickory, maple with some pines and hemlocks. Extended stayers whshow proof of Covid vaccination can ( 5 nights plus) who experience lousy weather (cold and wet!) may request light use of the kitchen and bathroom. This does not mean lots of refrigerator space. Please plan on using a cooler for the majority of your perishables. (it's shady in the woods.) Light use does mean a short shower once per 2-3 days, and using kitchen for one simple meal per day. These visits will need to be scheduled, Thanks. I want others who may be here to feel comfortable. You would have access to the outhouse, of course, which is off the parking area near the house and to water, always available from spicket on deck. The field was formerly a hay field and the house a hay barn. The stream is year round. Now the field is a sanctuary for insects and birds. Read: it is not heavily mowed. Tick prevention measures should be taken. There is great hiking, Nordic skiing, dirt road walking, ambling, stream dipping, and culvert cooling very close by. From your tent you may hear deer, birds, coyotes, insects and the stream. To the north through the woods, are buildings where a family lives. I am on very good terms with these neighbors. Tent dwellers and they can't see each other but could hear each other so discretion is important. Putney (5 miles by road, 2 - 3 through forest) is a happening little town; as are bigger Brattleboro to South and Bellows Falls to North. Able cyclists can do it in 40ish minutes there and 1.5 hours back. There is a bus via Rt 5, N/S Brat/Putney/BellowsFalls. I've hitched from my driveway but most, regrettably, drive their personal automobiles. Guests of over 5 nights can shower and use washing machine. Let me know if you think you'll want to. If I am around and you would like I often enjoy getting to know my guests a little bit. When it happens its fun. Sometimes we just wont cross paths that much. Friendly people and not very many. Trails, forest, streams, fields, sky. Dirt roads and pavement close-by. Birds, deer, skunks and foxes. Fortunately for my chickens, not too many predator visitors. That could change in an instant.... knock on wood. .......AND REMEMBER: you will be camping in tick territory. ALL OF NEW ENGLAND IS RICH IN TICKS these days. so..... I mow the path nice and wide. and if you want to hang out in field or woods you really need to check with a light your WHOLE self. Not everyone get lyme disease or the other tick borne illnesses if they are bit , and not everyone who gets infected gets very sick, but some people really do. SOOOO this is an important warning. Look for ticks and remove them everyday. It is quite easy to hitch from here into Putney from where there is a bus. It doesn't run that often. mornings and evenings; I think mostly weekdays. I'm about 3.5 miles by road to Putney town, 9 miles from Brattleboro. Neighbors bike commute to Brat.; Its a good climb back home. I have hitched to Putney and back. There is a wide path cut through the field to your site. Head past the house to the East and you’ll find it.
