The Peacock Shepherds Hut at Ketteringham Hall
Welcome to one of our two Shepherd Huts, tucked away in the woods at Ketteringham Hall. The Peacock is a handmade 22ft "Keepers" style hut, made right here in Norfolk by the English Shepherds Hut Co. Become completely at one with nature in comfort and style with a cosy double bed, wood burning stove, ensuite bathroom and kitchenette. The Orangery Tearoom overlooking the stunning lake at the Hall is open from Wednesday to Sunday serving delicious snack lunches, homemade cakes and cream teas. You will experience a luxury break in a warm and cosy Shepherds Hut, complete with a wood burning stove and ensuite bathroom. The hut has Wifi, but provides a welcome break from television by not having one! The kitchenette is stocked with tea, coffee, sugar and breakfast supplies, with fresh milk in the fridge. There is also bedding, towels and essential toiletries provided. With its wriggly tin roof and cladding, cast iron wheels and cosy double bed. Within your hut, you'll be able to look out into the woods and enjoy a night of complete tranquility, but during the day you are situated in an incredible location with a rich history. Ketteringham Hall was the headquarters of the 2nd Air Division of the 8th United States Army Air Force during World WarII and the woods were where the airmen's Nissen huts were situated. They are under the command of Jimmy Stewart, the famous Hollywood star and Walter Matthau was also based there. The main Estate dates back to before William the Conqueror and the Hall was once the childhood home of Lady Jane Grey, England's shortest reigning monarch and younger sister to Henry VIII. Sir John Boileau was responsible for the Hall as it stands today, until it was sold to the Duke of Westminster in 1948. For a few years the Hall became a preparatory boarding school and in 1970 it was bought by Colin Chapman of Lotus Cars as a base for the Lotus Formula One team. The rooms at the Hall are now let as offices and the grounds are available as an ideal wedding venue. Guests in the Shepherd Huts will have unrestricted access to all parts of the grounds, including those marked as private. The grounds extend to 36 acres which include beautiful walks and feature two Victorian Follies now restored and separated by an impressive Ha-Ha overlooking sheep pastures. The Ha-Ha walk is accessed via the original wooden bridge over the lake which is abundant with wildlife, including many fish, swans, ducks, geese, herons and the occasional kingfisher and otter! The woods in this part of the grounds house several dog memorials to those pets who were the special favourites of the Boileau family. You will be left in peace to enjoy this wonderful Estate, but if needed we are only a phone call away. Ketteringham is 4 miles from the vibrant City of Norwich. Home of the Canaries football team, a magnificent Cathedral where Norwich School is located and where Lord Nelson once attended. There is an excellent Theatre, several cinemas, two large indoor shopping centres and numerous top quality restaurants. Even closer is the market town of Wymondham with its magnficent Abbey and many unique independent shops. The Sainsbury Centre for the Arts is nearby in the grounds of the University. The Norfolk Broads and the beautiful North Norfolk coast are within easy reach. Cars are safely accommodated in the Hall car park and there is road access to the Huts for unloading. However, there is no public transport at the Hall. You are in the woods, so expect a "back to nature" experience! You will hear the sounds of buzzards and owls which live nearby, cows and sheep grazing at the front of the Hall, but mostly the peace and tranquillity of the surrounding countryside.
