SMITTEN, the cabin in Rock Hollow at The Appleton Retreat. Total privacy and silence, except for natures calls, amongst glorious trees and boulders, bordering a resource protected area and stream to the south; and a wooded trail to a secluded pond to the north. If you are afraid of total silence this may not the place for you. If you desire to have a time out and experience being one amongst the trees and embrace nature's way, SMITTEN is the perfect place, with all the amenities to Get Away. SMITTEN is a off grid, beautifully constructed western red cedar cabin. A gorgeous bathroom features a cast iron clawfoot tub. It has a well equipped galley, and a screened in porch with a grill. It is heated by a gas fireplace that adds to the warm toned ambiance. A large deck extends the living area. The Rock Hollow location offers total privacy far away from BREEZE the treehouse and BRAEBURN the cottage, amongst large trees, boulders and wildlife. SMITTEN is near the Pettengill Stream where there are two kayaks available for water exploration. For additional information visit our website at The Appleton Retreat. Guests are welcome to use the wood fired cedar hot tub and sauna located on the trail map near Empire. (Trail map provided after booking.) Once you arrive, just let us know when and we can fire them up for you. There is an additional charge of $50 for the hot tub and $35 for the sauna. A washer/dryer and a large refrigerator/freezer are available on site for guest use. You won’t see much of Peter & Toby but we are around if you need anything or have a question just message us through the Airbnb portal. The Appleton Retreat is on 120 acres much of it a resource protected area. It is bordered by 1,300 acres of Nature Conservancy land with a wooded trail leading to a large secluded pond. This is a special area and just a 30 minute drive to Belfast, Camden, Rockport, and Rockland, the charming midcoast coastal towns. You will need a vehicle to get to The Appleton Retreat. There is 3/4 mile dirt road leading into Rock Hollow. Parking is at SMITTEN. Your dog is welcome so long as it behaves well off leash and plays well with other dogs. We do charge an extra fee of $50.00. (There is a two dog limit and the charge is $65.) The Appleton Retreat is a great place for all seasons. Bring your cross country skis and snow shoes to enjoy those clear cold snowy days. (During extreme snow storms it may be necessary to bring you into Rock Hollow via snowmobile.) For Guests booked more than 3-nights it will be necessary to inconvenience you for a few minutes while we swap out battery generators. The pond.... OR IS IT A LAKE? There is a trail starting at Braeburn leading to Newbert Pond. It is approximately a 30 minute walk through a well defined forested trail on Nature Conservancy's 1,300 acre reserve. Inquire about paddle boards...... To the East is the Pettengill Stream which The Appleton Retreat property borders. It is a huge 40 mile aquifer. The stream, albeit not very wide is navigable by kayak, which we provide. (In the draught of 2020 it was NOT navigable in the summer months.) In wintertime cross country skiing is great.
